FWIW, Zega cases are claimed to be 3.5 kilos (7.7 lbs). I didn't weigh mine but they felt quite light to me, so I'm willing to believe they aren't heavier than claimed. -Lujo Mike T wrote:

One other BIG advantage w/ Happy Trail - The mounting framework (which I leave on all the time) is a crash guard, and it is tough! Also-----another advantage of pannier framework, is it gives you a really good place to tie dry bags, luggage etc. to your seat and rear rack. Mark Sampson www.bigdogadventures.com

Yet another: should you find yourself sitting in a mudhole with your bike in your lap, there's a good handle to help you lift it.

I found Chase Harper bags on sale on the web The only color you can get at the sale price is red blue or purple. They are the 3850 dual sport bags. at 99 bucks it is a good price as they are normally about 185 bucks. http://store.yahoo.com/chaseharper/38dupusabag.html

I have been checking them out and I was wondering what you guys think of the Happy Trails panniers? Can they be swapped from one brand bike to another if you buy the rack for both bikes? They seem to be the nicest for the money. Mark Lewis

I've had both Jesse and now Happy Trails panniers, and I prefer the Happy Trails. Their lift off lids are handy when the bike is loaded up with camping gear on the seat. They are not interchangeable between my KLR650 and my GS1150. Marv Schmid

"They are not interchangeable between my KLR650 and my GS1150." Happy Trails sent me this reply with regard to swapping them between a F650GS and the KLR... "Yes you can do that on those 2 bikes as long as you use the Teton Or Owyhee panniers. I do it with my wifes bike F650 and my KLR." They said that I would have to get the racks for each bike.

Mark, I've been very happy with my Happy Trail boxes. You can switch the panniers between bikes, providing the 1) side rack on both bikes have identical dimensions between the mounting points and 2) your decision as to where to place the boxes on the KLR (front to rear and vertical placement) works just as well with the other bike. I liked my Touratech Zega panniers a lot. I'd easily choose those over the Happy Trails version. When I bought them (on a trip to Europe) the prices weren't much different; things might not be the same now. -Lujo Mark Lewis wrote:

I just got the panniers from www.klr650.com - they aren't (even remotely) the hightest quality but they were really, really cheap. There's typically a set (mounts and all see the link below) on ebay - got the whole set up with some extras for under $500 (that's about $510 shipped cross country- or about $200-250 less than the happy- trails and less than half the price of the zegas or jesse's, as I calculated). If you're looking for high quality (pretty welds, anti- oxidant coating, etc.)or you want a different size/canyon cut, look elswhere, but if you just want panniers that will mount and hold all your stuff and you'd like to save some money, take a look at ebay. As a grad student $ was a primary concern, and these do the trick. Mind you, I haven't had a chance to abuse them yet, but I have no reason to think they won't be able to take anything the happy-trails can take, they just don't look as pretty doing it!. They can take a little "coersion" in the form of some minor shape manipulation on the rack itself to get them to mount without any pre-stress, but for the price I kind of expected that. ebay link http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ViewItem&rd=1&item=2472232331&category=35580 same guy that has http://www.klr650.com so it's exactly the same setup, everything included. The extras on the ebay sight are also the items offered on the klr650 site. I also got the center stand, saved on shipping, and that bolted right on with no problems whatsoever. I know it's a long post, but since I'm not making a glowing recommendation, I wanted to let you know as exactly as possible what you'd be getting here! Hope that helps Eric in Philly
