You can use the stock 108-link chain with a 16t chainwheel. I tried it several years ago, but didn't like it for the KLR. Too much clutch-slipping required around town, and the top gear roll-on was impaired. Too many negatives to offset the slightly more relaxed running at highway speed. There are many who swear by it, however.

What I shoulda said was: Used to be 106 until I tried Enzyte.

Greg, I installed a 16 tooth front sprocket about 1000 miles ago. There were 13,000 miles on the A20 when I made the swap, (I probably ride 95 percent pavement). Both original sprockets looked good and the chain measures within spec, so I kept the stock chain and rear sprocket. I have some probably-all-pavement long trips coming up, and wanted to try out that gearing for the highway riding I'll be doing. I like it for highway speeds. It gives me 70mph indicated at about 4500 rpm, which I find more comfortable than the stock gearing. I think I prefer the stock gearing for my normal running errands and joy rides, so will probably go back to the stock setup after the tours of this Summer are over. Lars in VA

well took the ol klr 650 on a little longer short trip to make sure everythings good and it is. what a fun bike does anybody elses seem to really start running good at 4000 rpm and up?so now all i need is some brake pads and might need fork seals by the end of the summer I am wondering if me doing a 44cent mod instead of a 22 cent mod made it realy get a kick in the pants at over 4000 rpm or if thats just the way it is.
