Next time you're out riding at about 50MPH down a straight, lonely road, stand up. Where'd the turbulence go? I use a tall shield for winter and put up with the turbulence. At least its warm turbulence, but for summer riding I completely remove the shield and really enjoy the ride. The subject of "air" is extremely complicated. What works for one makes thing worse for another.

Not really an option for us tall riders, we have too much flat frontal area and the wind pressure at high speeds becomes extremely difficult to counter. (Those of you who are, err, penguin-shaped, may be a bit more aerodynamic in that regard). Those of you Back East where there is a 55mph speed limit don't understand that, I suppose, but out here in the West if you went 55mph on anything other than a city street you'd get run over -- traffic out here moves either 15mph or 75+mph, with no in-between, and 75+mph is a *lot* of wind blast without a windscreen of some sort. For summer use, I use a stock KLR windshield with the lip cut off to reduce the turbulence a little. For winter use, I use a Slipstreamer CF-30 "universal" handlebar-mounted windshield. For both summer and winter, I have an Arai full-face helmet, which is much more aerodynamic than el-cheapo helmets in the inevitable turbulence that happens because of all that jagged stuff behind the KLR fairing. The alternative is to install a bar-mount windshield, which will sit a lot closer to your face, and move the turbulence behind you. I haven't tried it on a KLR, but my experience with bar- mount fairings tells me it will work. One of the most comfortable and quiet fairings I ever rode behind was a big Wixom bat-wing fairing that I ran on a /5 for a while. The cowling came way back over the headlight, and the screen, only slightly curved, stuck up about eight inches in front of my face. I trimmed it so I just looked over it when I was looking a hundred yards up the road. I had to look through it to see anything closer. I could ride with my faceshiels up in a nice bubble of calm air. It could be kind of unpleasant for the passenger, however.

I have one of those bar mounted shields and it works real well ...... put lock tight on the bolts and thumb screws though. Take it off if you are riding in rough terrain as it might knock your teeth out if you ride with an ope face or flip up type helmet. Bought it from a guy named Fred in Moab. Criswell

I am also a very tall rider, and recently put on the tallest Clearview windscreen, I think it was like +14''. It is also the dark tinted. It really did a nice job for winter protection where I am at (Between Chicago and Milwaukee), but even with the tall height, it still buffetted my helmet right at the top something fierce. So, one day I tried experimenting by just putting my hand a few inches above the top of the windscreen, and the buffett was gone. So, I went home and clamped the stock screen on so that it stuck up about two inches past the clearview and it worked awesome. I mounted it using three bols and drilled :( through my clearview. It is easy enough to remove when I want to go off road, or when it eventually gets hot out. It does look kind of odd, but..... I'll try to post a pic sometime soon. It really does work great. A shorter person wouldn't be able to see over it though. I still look over the entire monstrosity. It would be hard to look through it. A funny side story, when I was testing the stock screen with the clamps, I pulled over (in the dark) to remove the clamps and stock screen to ride home. This way I would have a good comparison. I started to dismount from the right side, and stepped into a low spot. I thought the bike was on the side stand, but it wasn't. It dropped right next to me. It sure was hard to pick up in the gravel!!!!!!!!!! I hope that is my only time laying it down!!! Luckily their was no damage. Just loose mirrors, controls, ..... Good luck, Matt B. In the process of experimenting with that solution..seems ideal...windshield on for the highway (where the 'burbling' can be annoying)..quick detach for the off road (less speed and too much fun to worry about any wind disturbance) Was in Balckfoot Cycle (Calgary) yesterday..salesman told me "Twelve 2008's on order..TEN pre-sold..sight unseen!" Jud, I did this w/ a fairing windscreen from a BMW 750. Works GREAT! Ed

Nice to see someone else from my area rides as much as they can... I'm from Island Lake, havn't noticed you when I've been up that way. We'll have to get together for a ride some time. I'm curious about the +14 screen, how close does it come to your face? I've noticed my buffiting changes with the stock screen when I push it forward and was thinking of making a new one with a different curve, more of an upward angle. Mine has been down 3 times on the street and I can't remember how many on the dirt. Tank has a dent, mirror is broke, radiator fan shroud is "flexed", left side cover is missing. But the bike still runs great after 17 years. And since I inherited it last year, it has alot of sentimental value. Attachments : Fellow KLRistas,   In the desperate hope that all this Global Cooling will soon come to an end, and the remaining 18% of winter will soon be behind us; and that very soon a beautiful, green spring will be here - I have thoughts of getting my KLR back into the mode of being my "main transportation".  Sorry, I don't do snow on bikes.    In the fall I ordered an Africa Dual Platform seat from Arrowhead; I like it very much.  It helps my 5'8" (on a good, tall day) frame fit the KLR much better.  The only bad side effect is that the wind buffeting, which was previously below my helmet, seemed to move right up into the middle of my helmet.  Or, rather, I have moved down into the turbulent area with the lower seat.   So, naturally, I am thinking of taller windshields.   I really like the looks of the Zero Gravity windshields, specifically the "Double Bubble" series, or else the "Sport Touring" version.  I also think that the "dark smoke" would look really nice on my ebony 2009 KLR.  See:  http://www.zerogravity-racing.com/sportbikes/kawasaki_sptbks/206.htm  (I believe light smoke is pictured in the "head on view", so "imagine" it darker.)   My questions:  Does anyone have any experience with Zero Gravity?  Know of a good source, perhaps less expensive than the factory?  (Does Arrowhead carry these, Fred?)  I do see them on Ebay, but I would rather buy from a reputable source.   Will the extra height of the Double Bubble be enough to raise the turbulence above my helmet?  Or should I opt for the Sport Touring.  Both are taller than stock;  the DB looks like about 1.5" to 1.75" taller, the ST is about 3.5" taller.  The retail price of the two is the same, so it is not a money issue..... I think the DB would look better, due to not being overly high, but I am also more interested in function vs form.   Any input would be appreciated.   Chuck F. NE PA Frankly, I prefer the scent of 75% Saltpeter, 15% Charcoal, and 10% Sulfur.
