petcock questions

Post by Anton Perdices » Tue Sep 25, 2001 2:08 pm

Folks, I know what the on and reserve positions are for on the petcock but my question is when does one use the off position? Do you set it to off everytime you are not riding? Is it used to avoid wear and tear for whatever seals since shutting it off allows less gas pressure into the hoses etc? What do the people on this list do? Turn it off if your not riding for a couple of days etc? I never turn mine off and want to know if there is anything wrong with that especially when you let the bike sit for a couple of weeks without starting it. Thanks for all the info.

Seems that the off is only of use if you disconnect the hoses and remove the tank with gas in it. I've defeated the vacuum feature and still rarely put it on off. (or is that off on?) De nada Bogdan

I only turn it off when I remove the tank, but my 600 does not have a vacuum operated tap.

Nah.

I suspect that it is a safety item designed to limit fuel loss from tap if the tank comes off the bike in an accident.

Turning it off manually should not make any difference unless there is some fault with the vacuum tap operation. Mister_T Melbourne Australia

Any joking aside, if you routinely leave the bike parked for more than two weeks at a time, or more importantly take more than a month to run through a tankful of gas, you should be using a fuel stabilizer whenever you fill up. You'll probably get away with it for a while, maybe a long while depending on the additive package in your local fuel. But in the end you are in for a messy and (if you don't do it yourself) expensive carb strip and cleaning. Devon A15 '78 SR500 '81 SR500 Greg Paul wrote:
