Thanks to those who answered my query several weeks ago. My 2007 (at 50,000+ miles) was misfiring in mysterious ways after running a while in the 95F/35C heat. Stopping, even without turning off the engine, would cure the problem temporarily provided I stopped long enough. The usual suspects (jets, float bowl, fuel filter, petcock, etc.) didn't seem at fault. Answers from this list included possible carb diaphragm tears, vapor lock and CDI or coil issues.
The solution, as far as it's progressed, was to wait just long enough for temps to cool significantly, then take off for Copper Canyon and points south. I've tried my best to get the engine hot enough to duplicate the problem (for example, a 6000 vertical foot steep uphill in gravel, clay and mud out of Copper Canyon, plus numerous loooonnnnggg uphill highway grades and slow-speed lanesplitting in rush hour Puebla and Chihuahua), but haven't yet succeeded.
I surely will succeed, however, somewhere between here and Tierra del Fuego. In fact, maybe tomorrow. When I do, I'm carrying a giant role of insulating reflective tape, which I'll plaster all over everyplace I can think of. And if it turns out to be CDI or exciter coil related, I guess I'll practice ordering beers in Spanish while I wait for parts to arrive by Fedex from Fred (who will have anticipated my need and mailed them out the previous week).
Thanks to all who responded, thought long and hard about responding, or decided not to make fun of me publicly. And if any other ideas occur, I'm still listening.

IMHO the KLR has lesser quality pigments in its plastic than some other model/manufacturers. Here is a product I have had great results with over the years. Simply apply it to plastic or vinyl like you would Armourall. http://www.properautocare.com/303.html?gclid=COCEtIvx4J0CFRlcagod_SKULg Larry.> > Lately I've been reading here a few comments about faded plastics. > > I just got my 2009 a month ago. It is garage kept. Should I be waxing it with SPF50 when I take it out? LOL! > > Are you victims of plastic fading leaving them outside all the time? Or are the plastics just prone to fading no matter what, just with age?
