It was almost full; I would have got another inch or so of fuel into the tank, but it wasn't really bad, either. Perhaps I could have squeezed another quart, maybe two, in. Anyway, just out of curiosity, I shined a flashlight into the tank, to see where the fuel was when I was on reserve. I could see a rubber or plastic "extension" hose on the metal gas line, raising the "reserve" about 1.5" to 2" higher past where the metal line originally ended. More or less what you are talking about doing.... So I hit reserve earlier than if that extra hose wasn't there. Perhaps the factory got wind of your idea?As a side note, based on how much *I* put in, my first tank got a minimum of 48.3 MPG - obviously not exact because I put more gas back into the tank then I used. I'll know better my next fill-up, as I will fill to the same level each time. But this is not bad for a bike that's not broken in yet. Chuck F. The higher of the 2 'pipes' controls WHEN you go on reserve, so if you modify it to be longer, you'll have a better warning (and farther to seek fuel) of when to gas up. Mine is an extra 1 1/2" higher giving around 100 miles on reserve. I cut it and added a piece of fuel line in the middle that made the space (where I cut it) to 1.5". pit cock leak question
In mixed riding on my '09, I usually have to hit reserve around 215-225 miles. My petcock has not been modified, and I have the $0.22 carb mod and muffler mods in place. I think you're about where you should be. Claims of 50-55mpg with the new KLR may be a bit optimistic.
I guess it's theoretically possible, 55mph on a downhill stretch with a tailwind and then.... maybe.

rivet tool for chain
I ordered a chain and sprocket set from http://www.klr650.com/ChainandSprocketdeal.htm. The chain is a Super Links 520 O ring chain. Could someone tell me which riveting Tool will work with that chain (If its even a Rivet Chain) I did this once without a tool and man what a pain in the ass!
