how do i drain the carb?

What is the Clutch life on a KLR 650, I was farting around with my 99KLR 650 last night, and noticed that when I pulled the clutch in it did not want to dissengage, with clutch handle all the way in i could barley get the bike to roll it was like it was in gear dragging the tire. is this a sign of a clutch wearing out, also when i first start it in am if i dont let it warm up real good and work the clutch handle about ten times,I will get a pretty hard jump when I put into first gear. I now the plates stick a little, bit but its like I cant get enough pull to disengage the clutch, I adjusted my cable and it is still pretty tough in the am. after it is warm it works great. need some advice. If it's cold the plates stick like they are not releasing. Check your clutch cable. and adjust it. Since you have a 99, you may need a new cable. have you replaced it yet. how many miles of use are on the cable. The biggest wear area on the cable is about 3 inches from the hand lever, where the cable makes a bend in the steel sleeve

i wouldnt worry to much, i notice that almost all the time since my bike was new (a16). Just let the bike warm up for a minute before going, and pull in clutch a few times, i found that that alone doesnt help, but revving the engine a little while pulling the clutch helps big time, for me anywayz. Give it a try. Pull in and release clutch quickly while revving (dont rev the piss out of it, up to 2500rpm or 3000rpm should be ok.) a few times, and all should be good. I dont know about clutch life on the bike, but a 99 should be good for years to come, you should be able to get about 20000km i figure on a clutch or more, depending on how you drive. Make sure you dont ride the clutch like a cowboy, have the clutch fully engaged at as low rpm as possible without stalling, if your real good, you should be able to have the clutch engaged fully at about 1500rpm or less without stalling. Also, a big thing i see people do is slip the clutch through gears when riding. Dont do that! from 2-3 and 3-4 ext., it should be... rev bike to desired rpm, release gas, then pull clutch in, shift gear, then release clutch ALL the way, then give gas again. Can be done really quickly. I dont want to make you seem like you need driving advice, just a few tips to extend clutch life, it works for me! Ya, good oil, so that is out. The drag suggests incomplete disengagement. I would look very hard at getting a new, upgraded clutch cable to begin with. I just acquired a new one myself - The top-of-the-line Motion Pro Terminator cable. You can get them from Fred at Arrowhead Motorsports. About $30.00. The cable is VERY smooth (I lubed mine up before installing - some people don't, but I do). Also, it transfers movement in a very efficient manner to the clutch mechanism. I am assuming that you are using a stock clutch lever assembly and grips that are not so thick as to preclude a full range of motion. Mike Torst Las Vegas

Yes. That is the one. You do not have to take it all the way out to drain the bowl. It works like a petcock. Open it up a few turns, and the gas will start running out the nipple at the bottom of the float bowl. I put a hose on the nipple so that the gas can be drained into a can of some sort, instead of all over the engine. Rick A17
