bike not shifting

Post by Chris Long » Sat Aug 15, 2009 8:27 pm

Hello everyone, I have been lurking here for awhile gleaning information from you all. I just did a big service on my 08 KLR. I replaced the valve shims, checked the oil screen and added a thermobob among other things. I put it all back together and it runs great! The thermobob seems to do its job, but the bike is in first gear and won't shift. The shift lever moves up and down and returns to the center position, but it doesn't change the gears or click or anything else. Any ideas on what I may have done? Thanks in advance for the help! <><><><><><><><><> <><><><><><><><><> Chris, My guess is the shift lever is misplaced about one tooth. But if you didn't have the shift lever off during your maintenance I'm gonna guess something got messed with when you had the right side open for the oil screen cleaning. Make sure the splines are clean, the bolt has plenty of 'good' threads, and be careful not to over tighten--all of which I am sure you know....smile. It might be, all need is a new, good quality bolt.... If the bolt tighten downs, and pinches the metal together, most likely you will have to open up the gap where the pinch bolt, pinches. You should be able to do that with a hacksaw blade, (off the bike!) and tighten it down again. Let us know if that helps. Hopefully it is just a loose bolt. revmaaatin.

I forgot to mention that I did not remove the shift lever and it doesn't seem loose. I did remove all the clutch plates though. Perhaps the pawl spring is in that area? Maybe I forgot to tighten something that was near there. Thanks for all the replies, Chris

bike not shifting

Post by hershonm » Sat Aug 15, 2009 11:12 pm

Same thing happened to me, Chris. The bike shifted from neutral to first, then just quit shifting. When I had the covers off to check the oil screen, a U-shaped flat steel spring in the shift mechanism popped out of place. I had to take both covers off again, I think, and it took me a while to figure out how the spring fit in - at the shift drum. Fred Hink told me to check that spring, and he was right. Be careful when you put the cover back on over the water pump shaft. I tore my oil seal too. My bike was off the road ten days. Good luck with this....Let us know what happened. Maynard

bike not shifting

So I just got around to working on this. Thanks for all the help with good answers. I took off the right case and part number 92081 on the picture below was missing. Of course it took me a while to figure that out since it wasn't anywhere in the case or anywhere else that I could find. So now I need to order a new one and put it in. If anyone in the Denver area has one sitting around, I'd be happy to buy it from you. Otherwise, I'll just order one tomorrow and wait. At least I have one motorcycle in service now. I just replaced a neutral switch in my old Goldwing. That was quite involved. I would look some more. You may want to check your oil screen. My brother-inlaws was off and I found it in the oil screen. ________________________________ From: Chris Long To: dsn klr650 dsn_klr650@yahoogroups.com> Sent: Sunday, September 13, 2009 1:47:58 PM Subject: [DSN_KLR650] Re: Bike not shifting So I just got around to working on this. white rim trail - moab

If you don't find someone to ride with on the WR, stop into my shop and I'll probably be able to set you up with someone. There are lots of guys riding the Trans America Trail this time of year and lots of them are doing the WR. Fred http://www.arrowheadmotorsports.com http://s1.zetaboards.com/arrowhead

This will be my second trip to Moab with my 2008 KLR and I would love to ride the White Rim Trail in one day. Anybody in Moab the last two weeks of September and interested in joining me? I don't want to ride that particular trail alone, just in case. My off road skill level is soso - I have done all the easy trails around Moab and some moderate. Got turned around by the Widow Maker though - could not scale it. Cheers, Herm Kansas City,MO 2008 KLR red [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]
