tire upgrade

Post by Gary Thacker » Tue Aug 18, 2009 4:56 pm

Yeah the local guy can only get the 3.00 here also. He called his supplier and was told they couldn't get the 3.25. I am puttin on a rear 270 and was thinkin about a 270 for the front but the original front is still in pretty good shape. If it will really make a difference I'll change it also. I run pavement and dirt and gravel. Nothin extreme just local dirt and gravel. The original still works pretty well for my ridin. Gary Souderton,Pa. tire upgrade

Post by Jeff Khoury » Tue Aug 18, 2009 5:39 pm

I've read that exact same complaint from dozens of riders regarding the K270 front tire. I ride very aggressively on the road and I insist that my tires keep up with me. My R1-riding brother calls me crazy when I drag the pegs on a canyon road on a KLR. I even knocked the left peg "feeler" off on one such turn. On Latigo Canyon I was outpacing him on the rough spots. Off road, I'm a cautioned and reasonable guy but I do want some performance there, too. I like to have fun, but I'm the only one I ride with that doesn't crash. We all have different riding requirements and the K270 is not for me. I'm coming to the conclusion that I'm gonna need two sets of wheels. One for my street riding, and one for trail. I may put Kendas on the trail wheels but I need predictable performance on the slab, and almost every review I read says that the K270 is not the tire for that. -Jeff Khoury Astatic Solutions, LLC.

I'd have to say that the best 50/50 tire for me is the Dunlop 606. I live in San Diego where we have combination paved twisties (Hwy 94) and awsome off road parks (yes, off road parks funded by the state, ex: Ocotillo OHV). Yes, they are aggressive and loud. They handle very nicely off road and even stick to the pavement on road. No crabbing sideways. (Q?: Do LOUD tires save lives?????) Okay, where was I? Yes, tires. Right now, I have a Kenda 270 on the rear and a balding Trail Wing 41 on the front. Why? Long story that involves a 3,600 mile ride, a funeral, N & S Dakota, generosity beyond equal by 2 of S. Dakota's finest citizens, and Nicaragua. But I digress again. I do really hate to say this, but feel compelled to. The Kenda 270 is dangerous on pavement. It could kill you if you don't pay more than normal attention in a paved turn. Wonderful-wonderful on loose stuff. Some call it a walking tire, that once you take any paved curve, it crabs sideways like a bad case of oversteer. You can even take the outside knob and bend it over with finger pressure. The Dunlop 606's do not do this and hold their rectangular knob shape. If the Dunlop has advantages over paved and are equal on loose conditions, why ride the Kenda 270? In my opinion, the Kenda 270 should only be used off road. ......So in conclusion Senator, I just wanted to say that the Kenda 270 is dangerous on paved turns. Is this a fair statement? tire upgrade

Time to replace my tires. The Front is a D705 (I assume stock origional) the Rear is a Trailwing-42 which has very little tread left. I got the bike with 2700 miles, I know have 8000 on it. I've read through the thread, found a mess of comparisons, and am leaning to 606's or GP-1's I use the bike for a lot of around the town commuting during the week and hunt down gravel roads working my way to single track on the weekends. What last minute points, thoughts, or opinions do I need to think about... Lastly, anyone in the Twin Cities area up for learning me to change the tires?

This time I splurged and bought front and rear TKC80. I used to keep the IRC at 26/28 lbs. no matter the road surface. The max pressure shown on the side wall for the TKC80 is 40psi. That seemed a little excessive so I tried 34/36 this morning. They felt great on the road, quicker through turns, but got a little squirrely on the dirt (dry powdery red clay this time of year)& gravel. I'm wondering what others have to say about these tires and air pressure. > > By the way, I also upgraded to a mid weight Progressive rear spring. (Did the fork springs over a year ago.) Great improvement! No more mushy feeling. Solid. > > Dave >

I'm using the 3.25x21 K270. Why? Bit more "flotation" in sand. Ed

My Alberta plate reads "RAKUDA", which means "Camel" in Japanese. Had the plate on my A13 until Sep 07, when it switched to the 08. DC eddiebmauri wrote:

Bring your tires and bike down to Hudson some saturday, and I'll give you a hand. Or better yet, stand there with the tire levers until Craig steps in to do it.
