Ok, I waited to long to do the valves. One ex. valve was tight, put all new shims in and now I have a knock in the motor. I have rechecked the valve gaps, all is good. After this I adjusted the balencer chain tension. Main thought is ex. valve was not closing right before, now not closing because of blow by left overs. The bike runs good if not better now with noise. 2000 KLR with 55K miles Does anybody have other ideas? Thank You

If the spring on the balancer chain tensioner is broken, the slack in the balancer chain wouldn't be taken up when you adjusted it.
Just a thought.

noise after valve adjustment
I waited too long to adjust my valves on an 06' klr. 18k mi. I had the same problem with one exhaust valve being tight. I shimmed all four as wide open as I could and the bike was noticably louder as far as valve slap. It runs great no problems; just noisy valves because they have proper clearance. The point here is; I slowly got used to less clearance over time and quieter running valves. If the clearance checked out O.K. and its not obviously hammering something inside the engine. You are probably good to go. Greg J.
