I am considering buying saddlebags and a tail bag for the KLR. I was wondering if you guys could pass on your experience with the various brands/models that you have or have tried? I'm lookin' at the Chase Harper Dual sport bags, the Ortlieb dry bags, and the TourMaster set, but I am certainly open to suggestions. Also, do your favorite bags interfere with a rear passenger? Larry, I got the Ortleib bags for my birthday a month ago. They will each swallow a full-face helmet and some clothes, and still seal watertight. Between an Ortleib duffel lashed to the back rack, the saddlebags, and a Tecnic tank bag I can put a full cart's worth of groceries on the KLR. I have had Chase Harper stuff in the past, it was made OK but not waterproof. My opinion is that non-waterproof bags that require rain covers are a pain in the ass. I am totally happy with them, and knowing how much they cost would have bought them myself. My wife likes the setup since she can lean on the duffel a little bit if it's really full. Larry, Like Devon I have the Ortleib bags and duffle and am very happy. I have the bags mounted permanently on the bike with the straps going under and behind the seat. That way I avoid having the straps go over the voltage regulator. There are pictures of my setup somewhere in the mods section of the Yahoo Groups site. Ralph

Larry, A friend of mine bought the Chase-Harper dual-sport bags, then saw my Chase-Harper ET4000's and wishes he'd bought those. They pack easier because of dual zippers across the top, hold more, and have a usable side pouch. I think theyr'e the same price as the DP's, too. I don't have a tailbag per se. I use a dry bag I bought from Jandd that has the waterproofing on the inside to prevent abrasion from wearing through it. Arden Kysely A11 "Mr. K"

My favorites are the Ortleib dry bags. Matched up with their dry duffel and you could tour the world. If you need more room, you take too much stuff Gino

I'm on the verge of buying a brand klr650. I really like the machine and have wanted one for the last ten years. But I need to know how to carry and stow items on the bike: helmets, wigs, bras, panties, heels, etc. You know, the stuff I need for my alternate lifestyles. Is there a molded plastic trunk that's designed for the bike and will fit on the back, or do I need some type of soft saddle bags? The one from JcWhitney works VERY well on the KLR. I've had mine on there for about 6 months now and have had zero problems with it. It also detaches and turns into a suitcase for travel. It was around $56 when I bought mine, it's the one without the backrest. Ryan

Excellent product. I have two of those and one E45 (http://www.cs.princeton.edu/~lbauer/klr/). They're expensive, and if you want them new the ebay price seems reasonable. You might be able to get used for cheaper. Also, if you're getting a top box, I'd get a bigger one. The E45 is identical from the side (as shown in the first image of that ad) just taller (second picture). I agree, I have the same setup. I think you could do better though if you catch a sale. Try Happy Trails. I think I paid around 120 for this bag and the mount is around 40. Go larger for the top case. If you travel on only need one bag just put the E36 on the top case mount, they are all interchangeable
