Hello, I was wondering if it is normal for a KLR to need about 200-300ml of oil refilled after 1500 or so miles of riding. I filled it up to the top of the oil level window when I changed my oil, and it needed just about 300ml of oil because the level was lower. My bike is 1999 model, with 4500miles on it. After reading about the KLR650 on the web for years, I've come to the conclusion there isn't a normal oil consumption rate for this bike. its a wide range of values. I've had bikes that didn't use a drop between changes but my A14 isn't one of them. Tatsu, your consumption rate pretty much match A14 @23K miles when using 15W50 Mobil synthetic. I bought mine new & this rate has been pretty constant. Although this consumption rate may seem high for a modern motorcycle but many other KLR riders have reported similar consumptions. Even though it seems excessive, it doesn't seem to indicate that something is about to fail. Like I said, my been using about 1 fl oz / 100 miles since new & its now at 23K miles with no apparent ill effect. I just have to carry oil in a camping fuel bottle when going on an extended trip. Yes, no, maybe. Many people report that they have to add oil after they do a lot of high speed riding or after they do a lot of really rough off-road stuff. My KLR doesn't lose a drop, but (shrug). The amount you're talking about is fairly typical. -E

Thanks to all! It seems like the comsumption is normal, and my bike is running fine. I guess its something I shouldn't worry too much about. I'm new to motorcycles, so I will probably be asking newbie questions, but please bear with me. :) Tatsu

One thing to keep in mind - if you cruise the KLR650 at 5000rpm or less, you oil consumption will be lower. Think 16-tooth front sprocket.... Checked my oil level today. Last change was 900 mi. ago and included a new filter. Had the oil level up to the top mark in the sight glass at that time. Today I couldn't get any oil to show itself at all, even tilting the bike to the right. Since I was fresh out of oil I rode one mile to a gas station and put in a pint. Then the oil level was over the top of the sight glass! Not much leeway, is there? Should I be worried about overfilling it or can I just ride, since it's using oil anyway? Does the KLR do something confusing like retain a lot of oil in the filter cavity when it's parked on the kickstand? I've been doing some 75mph freeway commuting on the KLR. Guess I'm going to have to keep a closer eye on the oil level. Did a front end service: fork seals, 15W oil, steering bearings, etc. What a difference, even on the thrashed K270 front tire. Completely transformed the handling. The front end feels more planted and provides much better feedback from the front tire than before. I'm squeezing the last few miles out of the Kenda before mounting the Scorpion A/T that's waiting in the garage. Then I'll be carving canyons with the best of 'em. The weather has already started to warm here in SoCal and with the Daylight Savings Time it's riding time even after work! Thanks, ian

Don't check the oil level with the bike parked on the side stand. It has to be standing perfectly straight up. Criswell

I recently purchased a 1996 KLR with 6600 miles on it, my question is how long does it take for the oil level to equalize after riding. On my Voyager and ZRX you could stop riding and check the oil in a few minute, after riding I checked the oil and have to lean it over to get the oil to show in the window. Fill it up to the top of the sight glass. When riding and the oil is warm, it should settle down in less then a minute. Note that you can't check it with the engine running. -- Doug Herr A16 in Oakland, California
