Black bedliner paint from Wallmart on all plastic ..... then
depending on skill and paint supply, you paint / make whatever type
of KLR custom you can handle (which is what I did). I hate the '99
teal green which is what mine used to be. Red / Yellow / Black
now.Jimmy Clark is the only race driver that made green look
good ..... and he got killed. Unlucky color .... green. Red is faster.

Meguiar's ScratchX will cut the oxidation off and shine things up, but it takes a lot of work. It is less abrasive than Wenol, which I also tried. I asked Meguiar's if they had anything better than ScratchX to suggest, but they said, "No".
Maybe a top coating of a product with UV inhibitors would help the polish job last longer.....

You need an actual cutting polish, like Wenol metal polish,
jeweller's rouge, etc.

I use lemon pledge all the time, as a vehicle wax. One on the main
ingredients in carnuba wax. It sprays on easy, and is a lot cheeper
that the spray Honda wax I used to buy.

Hi Craig, I have a red 04 that was starting to look a bit faded, it spends pretty much the whole riding season parked in the sun. I tried Maguar's PlastX last year and found while it made the bike look a lot better when done it seemed to look much more faded by the end of the season, I think the abrasive in it cleans off the oxidization but it doesn't protect the plastic afterward.
If the plastic is faded badly one way to bring it back to new is to first clean it with the finest steel wool you can get, 0000 if I remember right, Once you remove all of the shine and small scratches follow that up with automotive type polishing compound to get rid if the scratching left by the steel wool. After the compound I then used the Maguar's PlastX to further polish the plastic. Lastly I had very good luck with EagleOne Nano wax, sprays on and whips off very easily and quickly and seems to protect and last well on my car, which is good because I really suck when it comes to cleaning the bike once the riding season starts.
I'm not sure how much UV protection the Nano wax has so if I start to notice the fading coming back I'll try a different wax, for sure I don't want to make the above a habit, while I can usually be caught with a muddy or rain washed bike I really hate the cheesy look of faded plastic......have a great weekend ......Greg

I had excellent results painting plastic with that new paint specially
made for
plastic, it was a new box crate from crate and barrel that I red-neck
attached
to the KLR. I was able to find a 'blue' color that matched the 09 Blue
at Walmart.
Might give painting it a try if you can find the color close enough, or
just paint it
black, which all fashionable KLR rider knows goes with everything! But
you won't
be able to ride before Labor Day, or is it Memorial Day, and is is
white, f it just
paint it black!

If it's really bad, throw some heat from a butane, propane torch or a heat gun. Same applies to faded wood/uerathane.

Scott's Liquid Gold, but fade returns after a week or so.
Lemon Pledge seemed to hold up well.

Hey Greg,
My intent is NOT to rain on your parade. I'm sure you got your KLR looking LOVELY, but don't forget:
IT'S A KLR, NOT A HARLEY!
