I've had more than a few close encounters here in Los Angeles, and only one can i attribute to an intentional action. The vast majority of them are inattentive, clueless drivers, mainly those on handheld cell phones, even though it's "illegal" here.
The one incident was on a beautiful night. It was cool and clear so I decided to go for a quick spin on my '09 KLR before bed. I headed down the 10 and curved on to PCH and was cruising a gentle 50MPH north toward Malibu. I came to a stop behind a Porsche at one of the first few stop lights.
When the light turned green, the driver took off at a normal pace and then about 400 yds down the road slammed on his brakes. I took evasive action and took the left lane to go around. I was surprised to notice that he was a well-dressed man in his early 50s or so. He then pulled behind me and started hi-beaming and tailgating me (I'm assuming the KLR's high headlight disturbed him in some way and no, my high beam was not on). So, about this time I was wishing I'd ridden the Seca so I could have a little more go-fast. I saw we were about to overtake another car in the left lane, so I dropped two gears and wound it out, but since he was in a Carrera, he had no problem staying on my tail. As I overtook the car to my right, I quickly darted into the right lane and slowed down. He pulled in front of me and brake-checked me again. This time I took the shoulder and the car behind me nearly rear-ended him. He quickly took off and I continued on my way, and as luck would have it, the next light was red. I filtered up next to his window and asked him "What the eff is your effin' problem? Are you effing insane?" He looked at me with a blank stare. The light turned green and he proceeded on. I pulled over at a semi-protected area of shoulder about a mile up the road.
I whipped out my cell and dialed 911 and reported him. I was frustrated that I had no handsfree so I could follow until the LA County Sherriff's Department could pull him over, but that's life. After I filed the report, I continued north on PCH and saw a Deputy sitting on the side of a road running a speed trap. I pulled over and gave him a report, then headed home.
I'm not prone to violence, but if I ever run into that joker again, I don't want to be responsible for what I do to him. In my opinion that's pretty close to attempted vehicular homicide and I don't take that lightly. If you're ever on PCH in Malibu, keep an eye out for him. It's a gray Carrera, CA plate: ZUMABCH

Hangings too good for him. There are a bunch of jerks and idiots we
share the road with. I still remember laying on the ground waiting
for the guy that nailed me when riding home at night on my Kawasaki
H1, waiting for him to come to my aid. he drove off but was caught
later. He was dog drunk.

Let's just say that I miss Los Angeles and its drivers a lot when I ride
here in Denver.
While I don't think they are the worst drivers in the country, they do rank
fairly high. For instance - it's illegal to lane-share here, but on occation
I filter up to a light. *every* time I do that, someone will get irate,
screaming, waving fingers/arms and sometimes even break laws (speeding,
unsafe pass etc) to "show me a lesson" I presume, by tailgating me.
They do not leave room for lane splitters either, so I figure that it's a
deep seated jealousy of those who don't have to be stuck in traffic.
There's also a deeply rooted need to drive slower in the left lanes, despite
the law saying "unless passing, stay to the right". Highbeams won't help,
honking doesn't help etc etc.
Near my town I have a couple of round-abouts and there's always someone
(like this morning) who refuses to stay in his/her lane and will
'straighten' the roundabout by going from the right lane entering to the
left in the roundabout and exit out in the right lane again.
One step removed from manslaughter, these morons.

Here in New Jersey I believe that lane splitting is not legal. If a motorcycle was to have any part of itself or the rider in my lane I would not like it. It wouldn't be due to any deepseated jealously on my part that is for sure. I would be agitated though. I also really find it outrageous when I'm on my KLR and a car cuts into my lane or a car passes me, often at high speed, in my own lane, when I am slowing or stopping to make a left (and I'm properly signaling with t/s and a bright LED stop light).
The point I'm trying to make is I don't see how a motorcyclist can think it's ok to lane split but not ok if a car does it to the motorcyclist. I think it is dangerous either way. In fairness, I think it should be the same rules for a car and a bike. I vote for NO lane splitting for either. I recognize it seems a waste not to take advantage of the opportunity to lane split but there are safety concerns which also could included the "to keep the peace" reason not to lane split. Your mention of the irate motorists illustrates that point.

Here in California, lane sharing is legal, and is the safest place to be in traffic.
Think about it: 90+% of accidents on the freeways are rear-enders in traffic. The last place you want to be is sandwiched between two soccer moms' SUVs because the one behind you is talking on the phone, freshening her makeup, or the stock broker is reading the paper (Yes, I've seen it).
When traffic is slow or stopped, cars cannot change lanes as quickly and you have a predictable path to travel. In addition, if you maintain forward progress through traffic, the rear-enders will most likely happen behind you or to the side of you... not into you. I've had rear-enders happen next to me twice... lucky I was in between the lanes and not in front of the inattentive driver.
On top of that... I don't commute on my KLR - the bars are too wide. I have an old Seca II which is skinny and fits through traffic better. It's air-cooled and that forward progress is a must if I don't want to overheat.
Only the uneducated think that lanesharing is not safe. Au contraire.. it's the best place to be, just ask the CHP - they do it as a matter of policy.

Well, first of all I'm disappointed to hear that you consider me to be uneducated.
I am educated enough from first hand experience that lane splitting/sharing can be dangerous.
You make some good points which I am already aware of as far as the soccer moms and other idiots in their suvs etc and the risk of being rear ended by them. I have also been a victim of being rear ended in traffic while on my KLR and other bikes. So again I am educated in that areas as well.
The point of the CHP making it their policy, I have to laugh. I work with the police department.
Hey but I'm "uneducated" I guess.

I must apologize, that comment was not directed at you alone...
I've had a MC license since 1984 and a good amount of that time in California. Lane sharing is an animal that is somewhat unique in California, and the traffic here is abysmal. The people who say lane sharing is inherently dangerous are flat wrong. Yes, some people bomb between the lanes at 50mph. I'm not talking about them.
If you do it prudently it IS more safe than sitting in traffic. You will NEVER see a CHP motor officer sitting in traffic. NEVER.
The CHP's "rule of thumb" when it comes to lane sharing is:
"In traffic under 35mph you are allowed to share lanes and move not more than 10mph faster than the flow of traffic.
after traffic exceeds 35mph, you are obliged to re-join the flow of traffic."
-from a CHP friend of mine.
from the CHP website:
"Can motorcycle riders "split" lanes and ride between other vehicles?
Lane splitting by motorcycles is permissible but must be done in a safe and prudent manner."
Here is a video of a motor officer doing it, from the perspective of a sport biker following.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jhKWDYuMGiw
so, yes. I know of which I speak.

One step removed from manslaughter, these morons. -----Original Message----- From: DSN_KLR650@yahoogro ups.com [mailto:DSN_ KLR650@yahoogro ups.com] On Behalf Of gbennett69 I have had 4 close encounters with pple over the last 12k miles of riding in the jersey city area of pple deliberatley trying to cause accidents. It's actually far safer to lane-split than not. You're using the other cars
as shields if you will.
In over a decade of riding in Los Angeles traffic, I've done a fair amount
of splitting lanes and have seen plenty of cases where that SAVED someone
from more serious damage being pinched between cars.
Even the motor cops in California does it and the few I've talked to like it
and actively endorse it. The danger is when it's misused. Don't split lanes
at 90mph when traffic is moving at half that.
The odd part is that once you've done it for a bit you develop a sort of
sixth sense about who is going to do something stupid. Sadly, you also see
lots of bikers doing real boneheaded things.
One thing that I really like is that in California people MOVE OVER for you
(frequently at least) to let you split past safely. THAT is the key to safer
lane splitting. People with situational awareness and no unreasonable
aggression towards bikers.
Something Colorado drivers could learn from.
You said you think it's dangerous, but I hope you get a chance to spend time
in California on a bike and try it for a while. I think you'll come to
appreciate it. If it ever comes to a vote, please don't vote it down for
all the rest of us who are safer for it.
Side-note: I don't really think that filtering between stopped cars at a
light is "splitting lanes" really, it's merely a way to get to the front of
the pack and get going quicker - particularly in humid heat on a bike.

The point I'm trying to make is I don't see how a motorcyclist can think
it's ok to lane split but not ok if a car does it to the motorcyclist. I
think it is dangerous either way. In fairness, I think it should be the same
rules for a car and a bike. I vote for NO lane splitting for either. I
recognize it seems a waste not to take advantage of the opportunity to lane
split but there are safety concerns which also could included the "to keep
the peace" reason not to lane split. Your mention of the irate motorists
illustrates that point.
