lights/speedometer/rpm gauge suddenly stopped working

I have a 93 KLR and on theengine it has a place where kicstarter goes. Is this true??? how big a job and how much for the kickstarter???? thx kingfish

Kawi used to make a 'kit' to add a kickstart....I hear there no longer available. The individual new parts purchase would probably put it in the impractical range. On the other hand a friend was about to tear apart a KLR 600 carcass and see if the kickstart gears, etc. would retrofit. Our hunch is it will work. The parts were definitely in good shape and cheap... too early to tell for sure yet..... The labor isn't that major. G'luck.... Slide

Apparently there was a kickstarter kit that Kawasaki sold to fit the 650, but that kit seems to be NLA. If you could actually find the parts then it would not be real hard to fit. 600 parts don't work in a 650, BTW. Mister_T Melbourne Australia

That would be a good way to recycle all the old 600 carcasses sitting in wreckers yards.

[...] While you are in there, I'm curious about one aspect of putting a kickstart into a 650. One page 4-6 of the base manual there is a diagram of the lube system. The diagram appears to describe how the kickstart idler gear (mounted on the clutch end of the tranny output shaft) is fed by engine oil pressure. At a guess, the 650 will have a plug of some sort to plug in the bore in the crankcase that the kickstart shaft fits into. Can you confirm this? Mister_T Melbourne Australia

Kawi modified the clutch basket in '95, and the kickstarter no longer works on the later models. So, they eventually phased out the kickstarter kit. If you can find one used/ebay/whatever, you can install it. You have to pull off the right side engine cover to do it, there are a few gears that go in there. -- Dr. J. Anyone have any info on whether a kickstarter can be installed on a late model KLR 650? I've seen them on earlier models. I would feel more comfortable in the back country if I could have one. What parts are needed and how much work is it to install?? Thanks

Kurt, I've had a kickstarter on my Tengai for 7 years and 30,000 miles and have never had to use it yet. On the other hand, the battery on my A6 died (Yuasa sudden death) half way through the white rim trail on the first KLR Moab get together in April 1996. I got real good at bump starting that day. As a side note, after searching throughout Moab for a new battery, a customer at the NAPA dealer led me to a guy who had a few dirt bike parts for sale in his garage. This guy had the correct battery, prepped it properly, and helped me reattach the license plate to my bike for my trip home to No. Cal. I took this guy's name and sent it to Gino because he was looking for a good contact in Moab. Who was the guy? Fred Hink. The rest is history.
