What I have a hard time understanding as I sit at my favorite Wine
Bar in downtown Grapevine TX and the $50,000 custom pulling out of
the local Biker Bar a block down the street comes by me purposely
racking off his completely straight pipes damn near breaking my wine
glass ..... is how he gets by with running pipes like that? When I
first started driving / riding in the early / mid sixties, pipes like
that would get you an excessive noise ticket. I know because I got 2
or 3 tickets running my Vespa without its whimpy muffler and my 56
Ford hardtop with twin glass pacs. The Ford sounded good, the Vespa
didn't. My brother got a ticket with his 50 Merc running straight
scavenger pipes when he wasn't even being noisy by the cop just
looking at them and claiming they were illegal. I guess laws are
different from town to town but it sure seems like the Big Twin crowd
stretches the envelope. I don't really mind a nice sound even if a
bit loud, but really. I go to my local lake and some clown is running
a cigarette boat with waaaaaa-ay bunch of token babes .... running
straight pipes in the middle of the night as does guys with a drag
boat type motor on their boats. How do they get by with it?
I used to go to indoor short track races in the winter time with a
track in the local rodeo metal roof arena listening to a hoard of un-
muffled expansion chambered 2 strokes with an occasional un-muffled
BSA Gold Star. I could not hear for 3 days afterwards...... and my
wife says I don't hear at all ..... heh. I don't know which was worse
the smoke or the noise. But really, how does the Big Twin guys get by
with running completely straight pipes?

It's win-win-win: the rider gets his noise, the public doesn't have
to listen to it, and the motorcycling community doesn't have to take
crap for loud motorcycles.

I sure hope you are not saying it is OK to like or get along with someone that does not hold your views or have your same opinions... Sounds like "Heresy to me, I like it."

Why do we always seperate when we should be on the same side ?. Its strange that as a group we like to "Farkle" but yet if someone does something that someone else doesnt like the banter turns on the individual that is doing the changes. There must be a reason why there are things made for the KLR to inprove or add to it. I like a low rumble on my bike and I like the weight loss hence the Big Gun quiet series..
I think that its dam foolish to put aluminum boxs on your bike to get groceries or to take a 2 day trip...its total overkill in my opinion but I would not give a guy grief cuz he wants to do it..... nor would I give a guy crap for putting a centerstand or a set of warmers or rewiring the whole bike....maybe the freedom of choice and the ability and the money is there to do the project......so farkle away..... its way to much for me to keep up with all the other changes that people make... Some people have way to much time on their hands and hence the giving of crap for doing things different then them.
I hope that god forbid I didnt say something that makes the whole klr world go ape shit about what I said........ I just think that we need to realize that as a group there will be differences and personal touchs to a bike are just that....PERSONAL TOUCHS....
We now return to our regular sessions of crap giving or politics... YOU PIC.....

I think that people have the wrong idea of what I am saying. I don't think that the ills of motorcycling are the pipes. I think that they are part of it and agree totally with most of you when it comes to to loud of pipes... don't need them. But a quiet pipe is ok for weight loss and a little rumble if thats what you like. I have a stock system on mine.
A family having a picnic will remember a group of motorcycles going by no matter what... yes they will hear a pipe but they would also remember someone riding fast by them or doing a wheelie or whatever.... we are not saints and so goes some of the problems.
I will let my side of this drop, I just think that blaming the ills of motorcycling on pipes is placing to much on just one problem..and its everything as a whole that causes problems. They are closing the desert in california in huge amounts and it has nothing to do with pipes , it has to do with conservation and lizards and natural plants. It also has to do with people that don't stay on the trails and cause all kind of other problems with things and people around them...... Just my oppinion

Speaking of picnics and motorcycles. 30 years ago we unmuffled 2
stroke on expansion chambers riders thought it was way cool to meet
at the local lake (all 300 or 400 of us) and go roaring through
picnic areas thinking the pinickers would think we was way cool. They
didn't and eventually we were banned. Now those same trails are OK
for mountain bikes, walkers and runners ...... but the walkers and
runners are starting to complain about those silent mountain bikers
are swooping up on them from behind and scaring them.
