Hi Guys, Again, I'm getting itchy for a dual-purpose. I miss my KLR. I think this has been discussed before. If so, I'll know by being ignored. I like the KLR but I think of travelling by highway and the KLR is quite light and doesn't quite go that fast. Thus, I was eyeballing the Adventure 990 from KTM. I can reach the ground on it, and it's got the weight and power to take me quick on the highway. Please tell me reasons not to like KTM. KTM is a great bike. I don't have one, but would certainly put my name in the "want one" column. I've heard that parts can be difficult to come by but the number of dealers who have sprung up in the last year or two should help that. The KTM is by far a superior ride, you get what you pay for. Personally I have about a dozen other things I would like to do with $10,000 for a new adventure. Heck, If I look hard I can buy 3 KLR's for that price! Most of the locals around here I know ride KTM, simply because of the perfomance. 1. The KTM my friend had on the TAT took over an hour to change the oil. 4 plugs to pull, two drains, and two filters. 5 minutes to change on the KLR. 2. It seemed to HATE water.... any crossing we made over 6 inches deep made the thing run like an egg beater. The KLR thinks it is a submarine. 3. The jetting was a pain..... at altitude, it would not pull at all past 3k rpm. We had to stop, find a shop, and rejet. Again, time off of the trail. The KLR, conversely, was water friendly, and didnt really care if we were at sea level or 11000 ft. That's easy: $$$$ For the same amount of money, get a used KLR and a Suzuki V-Strom and set each up for the type of riding you want to do. You'll probably spend less for two bikes than for one KTM 990. (And I like KTM bikes, I am only answering your request!) Vladimir Vega III wrote:

Vlad, If you can afford it, the KTM 990 will be better on the highway and offroad than the KLR 650. I own a KLR and a KTM LC4 640 and won't ride the LC4 for any long distances on pavement because of the vibration, but it's awesome offroad. The KTM has 10K miles and I've already had to replace the entire head. Bear in mind I'm tough on bikes and have killed a KLR in the same amount of years but it took a lot more miles on the KLR. The 990 is a twin so it won't have to work as hard as the single cylinder KLR or the single cylinder KTM for that matter. The most comparable KTM to the KLR is the 690 Enduro. I happen to own and actively ride both, so I thought I'd chime in. You're right that it can take longer to do a full oil change on a KTM, as most KTM engines (including the 690) have two oil filters to change and two nylon screens to clean. In practice, especially on the trail, you can ignore the screens.

I haven't been fortunate enough to do any water crossings on either bike yet, so I can't provide a comparison.

The 690 is fuel injected and it runs just fine regardless of the altitude much like the KLR.

Apparently so! I've heard of the overheating problems with some of the EXCs, but the 690 has a very sufficient cooling system.

Blake, When did you cross over to KTM?? I hope your still riding the KLR too. I thought I'd chime in too. I ride a 2004 KTM 450MXC. Though not a dual sport by any means, other than gearing and lights it is the same as the EXC's. Carberated and I ride it at all altitudes with STOCK jetting. Though it is at it's best at 3000 feet, it will run fine to 8,000 feet. I haven't had it much higher. Has more radiator than the other 450's I ride with and does not have an overheating problem. The true story here is not about voter fraud by ACORN, it is about a fraudulent voter suppression effort by the Republicans. ACORN is actually a victim here, in that a number of the people it hired to register voters turned in phony registrations ("Donald Duck", "Mickey Mouse", "Tony Romo") in order to get paid for them (and presumably to spend the money on MD20-20?). ACORN is required by law to turn in all its voter registration forms; the phonies would be weeded out by election officials, and it is extremely unlikely that anyone would vote illegally as a result. Republican officials have used this (as well as a number of other phony devices) as a pretext to throw out thousands of legitimate, mostly Democratic voter registrations. The real fraud is being committed by Republicans. It should come as no surprise. It is clear from recent comments on this forum that some Republicans believe that mere citizenship is not sufficient qualification to vote, and that the vote should be limited to the privileged classes.
