1994 price
Got a line on a '94 KLR650 w/35.4k miles and as far as I know the only
upgrade is a gel seat--have not had a chance to look/ride it yet.
Assuming that there are no glaring problems with it and that nothing
else has been done to it--what would a fair price be--the guy is
asking $1200?
With the high(?) mileage is there anything special that I would need
to look at---of course I'll ask if the Doohickey or anything else has
been done.
Thanks,
Wayne

Why not ask him-- "What makes this bike worth $1200?" and 'make' him sell it to you at a fair price. It is hard to believe--the bike has that many miles and no farkle added. Is there a helmet, shop manual, safety clothing that could be added to sweaten the deal? What are you going to do with this bike? Adventure ride? Walmart shop? Commute to school/work? Is the bike set up the way you need it now, or will you have to change things to make it work for you? (Your 'real' cost is going up!) At that price, I would expect: the bike has not been beaten severely, and has new tires/tubes, fresh oil, a very good chain/sprockets and appears to have been stored in they guys living room since new; then it might be a good value. OTH: It would be hard to find ANYTHING 650 for less $1000 unless Uncle Ned is selling it to his favorite Nephew. I once was a favorite nephew.... I bought a 67 Fairlane (in 1979) like that once--I should have paid them the asking price and let them keep the car! I would have been $$$$ a head. It looked good--but everything 'rubber' on the car had dry rotted from lack of use, etc. I mean everything. Questions--I would ask, Are you the original owner? If not original, how many? Do you have a maintenace history? When did you last clean/lube the steering head bearings? When did you last clean/lube the swing arm? What oil change interval do you use? What oil do you use? How old are the tires (date installed)? (Installed Over 5 years old-- I ain't riding them very far!) What is the condition of the chain/sprockets? What is the clutch/choke/throttle cable condition? Look closely at the clutch perch, brake perch, and the mirror assembly for damage--as well as the switch groups on both sides. A 14 y/o bike @ $1200 bike (or $3,000) can have 3/$500 in chain, sprockets, cables expense right away. I suspect, it will need at least 1/2 of these items replaced...to be really road worthy. = trustworthy as an adventure bike. You could, during the test drive, ride it past the Kawi dealer and ask what he would give you on a trade for a new KLR 650. (I think--) the real street value of the bike ~20% more than the dealer would give you on trade. Good chance, the dealer would only allow ~$600 for a 14 y/o bike. Keep us posted. Can you post pictures for an Internet assessment? Even if you don't buy it! I would like to see what a $1200 bike looks like. smile. If it is an outstanding bike, it won't last long. If it is a well beaten pig, it will be there for a few days. revmaaatin.> been done. > > Thanks, > > Wayne > Marrowstone Isl, WA >

Kelley Blue book is a good starting point--especially for the seller. Unfortunately, the insurance industry uses NADA as the 'fair- market-value', and it makes me a tad concerned that if you buy at KELLEY values, and subsequently the bike is destroyed or stolen, NADA value is what will be used to assess your loss. the last published NADA value is for a 1995 KLR. see http://www.nadaguides.com/default.aspx?LI=1-23-38-5697-0-0- 0&l=1&w=23&p=38&f=5698&m=0146&d=1200008260&y=1995&ml=K&gc=MC>c=MC Low Retail Average Retail $570 $745 These values are percent-wise, a long ways form $1200 asking price, or the KELLEY value as well. Although, I would agree with Jim--the KLR historically 'sells-retail' closer to KELLEY values than the NADA values. The dealer will be using NADA values as well if you want to trade.... revmaaatin.>

nklr energy independence is a crisis. where's the people's bailout
Folks, we need to rally together for energy independence. I can't
say how sad I am to see our country deteriorating while we fund the
world's development and terrorists via our oil addiction. This
country has to come together and take a stand against Congress and
friggin special interests. Otherwise, the freedoms that dwindles
each year won't be here for future generations.
I enjoy riding my KLR and sharing this forum. However, it's not a
Constitutional right. If we don't get off our oil addiction, others
might never get such opportunities. Jobs--mostly manufacturing--
continue to go overseas (159k jobs lost with the latest job report).
We are starting to go beyond a tipping point. It is a crisis. Right
here and now.
Of course, I don't have all the solutions. In fact, I'm better at
fixing KLRs than meddling in politics myself. But I'm good at
identifying one thing as are most in here: things that are
dangerously broken. Our government led by Jackass Bush has
systematically driven things to the brink. Biden called Chenney "the
most dangerous Vice President we've ever had." Wow. You'd like to
discard it as rhetoric, but the crazy thing is no one disputes it!
Now, I'm not here to argue for Obama or McCain; Republican or
Democrat. Rather, remind you all how important energy independence
is. However is stepping in and up to run this nation needs to
understand clearly We the People are loading him into the breech of
our public weapon. The weapon that will wage a war on energy
independence. Don't take the job if it's not a top priority. Where
these jackasses and the special interests are getting in the way, we
need to drag them out of the way by their hair. Enough is enough.
The Bush oil wars need to end, and we need to create jobs here in
America and go back to strengthening our nation. Serious capital
directed to alternative energy will create jobs here and lower costs
of energy. The truth is good economies are predicated on cheap
energy. Paying $4 for gasoline and high heating and other energy
bills is just eroding real incomes. Our Congress simply needs to
STOP irresponsible spending. For example, $10B a month in Iraq
building its nation is unacceptable. At $4/watt installed (high
estimate) that's 250 million watts of solar energy and jobs created
getting it installed. We could be doing this monthly while spending
a lot less to strengthen our own national security here at home.
We'll never prevent every terrorist attack. We're wasting our money
fighting these wars. Every country leaving Afghanistan comes out
defeated...cut above the eye, fat lip and severe limp. We'll be no
different. Instead, let's enjoy a tidy backyard instead of trying to
clean up the messes all over in the world. When more countries
decide to put skin in the game and rout out the evil, then we'll
consider the problem real. Right now we're doing more harm than good
and getting weaker each day. Not to mention pissing away opportunity
and people with a ridiculous addition to oil.
I would sure like to see something like this being built in America
vs. United Arab Emirates. Not it's their second building...not even
done with the first. And we can't even get our Towers back!

Lastly, I'd be nice to enjoy a weekend without having to feel uneasy
for our men and women in harm's way. I'd sure like to see them get
the hell out of these places and put an end to the horrific injuries
and body bags being delivered weekly to shattered friends, family and
loved ones.

1994 price
Wayne,
That price sounds good to me so long as the bike is in good shape.
A year ago my son bought a KLR of that same year. He paid 1800 for it, but it had many extras. This summer we took it on the CDR and no problems at all.
Good luck.
