got muffler?

Post by smthng else » Tue Sep 23, 2008 8:57 pm

Hey all, I know it's been said before, but I apparently didn't heed the warnings enough, so I'm tossing out there for anyone else in my shoes... I was cruising home from the office, when I hear what sounds like a ratted out import car with no muffler. It gets a bit louder... louder... louder... But I can't for the life of me figure out where it's coming from. By this time it's REALLY loud and I start to notice... everyone is looking at me. I look down and see my exhaust hanging down, just about scraping the ground. I rapidly pull over and it falls off completely as soon as I come to a stop. The moral to the story is to loc-tite your exhaust bolts. I didn't do mine, but I did check them several times. Obviously that's not enough. They were still painted from the factory and hadn't budged, so I figured they were good. They were for the first 4900 miles or so. ;) It melted the rear brake line a bit (will be replaced by dealer), but no other damage that I can see. It took a fair amount of time and some creativity to get that catalytic cooled down and then duct taped to the rear rack to get home. :S --Jonathan "smthng" Kalmes Springfield, VA 2005 Yamaha FJR1300ABS - "Blue Bayou" 2006 Jeep Unlimited Rubicon - "Teflon" 2008 Kawasaki KLR 650 - It's here, but it hasn't earned a name yet. ;) http://smthng.info "Shake well... some settling is natural."

Guess you missed the recall, if you were on the KLR, this happened a year ago almost, mine was totally missing and I replaced them myself

Did they start putting catalytic converters on KLRs?

Yup... 08's and newer have them to get past newer emission standards... it's built in to the exhaust housing itself (the big "bubble" at the base), so I doubt there will be any "legal" aftermarket cans for the newer models, although I hear the older ones still fit with some minor bracket bending. --Jonathan "smthng" Kalmes Springfield, VA 2005 Yamaha FJR1300ABS - "Blue Bayou" 2006 Jeep Unlimited Rubicon - "Teflon" 2008 Kawasaki KLR 650 - It's here, but it hasn't earned a name yet. ;) http://smthng.info "Shake well... some settling is natural."

Jonathan, Where did you hear that '08s have a cat? When I reviewed the '08 I specifically asked the Kawi reps if it did, and they said no. Wouldn't be the first time there was bad info, but I'd think they'd know something like that. Thanks, __Arden

Several review sites said it does, there's a conspicuous "bulge" that wasn't on the '07 and the bulge was REALLY hot and stayed much hotter than the rest of the exhaust for quite some time. That all says catalytic converter to me. Of course, I don't *know* that it's a cat, but evidence is pointing me that way. If I weren't thinking about resale value on the K, I'd crack the thing open and take a look. ;)

There are a couple citations on the internet of a converter on the 2008 KLR650; who knows if they're accurate. I would think that the manufacturers would rather keep the subject of cat's quiet although that's not always the case. The 2008/2009 muffler at ronayers.com is $470 vs. $378.47 for the 2007 muffler. Could the price difference be due to a converter element??? Just guessing. ED

plastic parts

Post by Cindy & Wayne Burner » Thu Sep 25, 2008 3:12 am

My 86 KLR cleaned up well with some "Goo-gone" and a Scotch brite pad ,but that was only the white plastic. I am in the process of plastic welding , and cleaning up the plastics on a 2001 Honda ATV. There was a lot of scratches and some fading. The P.O. was a rider who liked the looks of flames on the bike, so he painted the plastic black, and scratched the flames out with a sharp object. I purchased a product called "Plastic Renew" , and it requires a series of sanding with progessively finer grades of wet sand paper, and a plastic coating applied in several layers. The more time spent sanding , and multiple coats, turned out very nice. I bought it at my regular shop here in NH, FMT Motorsports, through Parts Unlimited. It was right around twenty bucks, and worth it to me. Wayne(rice)Burner (who is thinking of studding the KLR tires this winter)
