after market pipe
Do pipes like Supertraps really up your gas mileage and performance
both?
I have not ever seriously considered spending $300 dollars on a pipe
and then a jet kit to boot. Last year when I did the math I would have
had to drive my bike 32,777 miles in order to recoup my expenditure.
Really! Now at $4.41.9 per gallon (I live in Wasilla AK.) I might be
able to recover my investment in my lifetime.
So, if you have personal experience with pipes, jets, and all that
please respond to me with a private message and let me know what brand
you use and any particulars that may help me out.

after market pipe
I have a 2007 klr 650-supertrap and jet kit and twin air filter--bone
stock my mileage was 49-51 as an average---with above mods it is 53-
55 and more if I ride steady--I have hit 59 mpg before. But it
depends on alot of factors---BUT, weigh the stock exhaust to the
supertrap and look at the weight difference, it is alot, horsepower
to weight is a factor also. My 2 cents. Oh by the way, there is also
a performance boost.

I haven't done so on the KLR (yet), but have added pipes and/or jets on just about everything else I've had. In general, it does increase mileage AND/OR performance. The reason I put the "and/or" in there is because if you get more performance and use it, you won't get better mileage. If you want better mileage, don't use the additional performance. Why private? Others may get some value from the answers. With all due respect to after-market vendors....where are the
independent, 3rd-party studies indicating significant performance
gains (in power or mileage)? In fact, I don't see manufacturers
pimping improved mileage any more than they can support it with
scientific proof. Sure, there are tons of anecdotal stories
including ones resulting in detrimental effects: where carb, pipe and
airbox mods actually reduce performance.
I think many people install these things, rejet, etc. and then
proceed to convince themselves the change made some huge difference.
Mentally, if this pleases you by all means get out the check book.
I suspect there is some change but good/bad and measureable? you need
to prove with something other than a "feeling." I mean we're not
talking myth busters here in this forum. And by the time you factor
in $400 for parts (we'll exclude time, tinkering, repacking, dialing-
in...all the wasted time fiddling), that's roughly 100 gals of gas or
5,000 miles. I'd rather spend the $400 on gas, personally.
My opinion is if and when someone buys a pipe and supports their
assertions with "real" scientific data under controlled conditions
(measured fuel, dyno or same road route, similar conditions in
temp/humidity, etc.), then I'd put some credence on such
claims/results. Until then, still I claim my stock KLR gets 500
smiles per gallon running on standard petrol plus adding a special
fermented spider urine which coincidentally I sell for $1,000/oz on
my...ah...spider-website.

after market pipe
Lately, I have been riding my 2007 KLR650 in a 20 mile roundtrip commute to a regional bus I ride between Reno (4400ft elev) and Carson City, NV. Usually with the stock exhaust and K&N Filter and no other engine mods(farkles) I get between 51 and 54 mpg with 30 mph and 65 mph sections on my commute. I'll report back on the mileage difference using a Laser Pro Duro (Street/Quiet) exhaust and Dynojet jet kit set for my altitude. Usually I get 230 mi or more before reserve without leaning the bike over for more of that last 1.5 gallons.

after market pipe
I have the supertrap pipe with 8 baffles in it. I got 60 mpg (Canadian
gallon) combined city 35%/bush15%/highway50% based on 250 km ride. I'm
pretty hard on the throttle and still get 400 km's on a tank. The pipe is
much loader than stock, but not Harley loud. I bought the bike with on it
and have no plans to switch back to the stock pipe as I heard another KLR at
a stop light. The stock pipe sounds pretty weenie IMHO. I'll take offers
on my stock pipe.
