random misfires
I have a well maintained 2005 KLR (10,000 miles) that has started misfiring at sporadic times (getting more frequent). I can be idling or cruising at 60 mph. It may be1 misfire or 2-3 in a row and then returns to normal running. It has the feel of water or crap in the fuel. The tach indicates a quick small drop in rpms when this happens. Since I started troubleshooting this I have noticed that the tach will have very quick very small drop in rpms with not apparent hesitation in the engine when I am cruising. I am thinking about putiing some Sea Foam in the tank to help clean out any crap in the system. I drained the carburator bowl and it was clean. BTW Sea Foam is hard to find on the coast of Maine. I have yet to find an auto parts store that stocks this item. We have lots of the real sea foam.
I did the valves during the winter (do not ride too much in winter in Maine), did the doo many miles ago, regular oil changes, tried a new spark plug, cleaned up the two safety switches (clutch and sidestand). I can't figure out if this is electrical or fuel related. I am leaning towards fuel.
The KLR ran fine for several months this spring/summer. Any help is greatly appreciated.
Another quick question. Has anyone experienced a thermostat sticking on their KLR?
 Thanks,
 John Plante

Thanks Bradley. I will give Walmart another look. If all else fails, Amazon sells Sea Foam through a third party.

Our Walmarts in Pa carry it. It helped clear my problem in one tankful. I did use half a bottle though

Hi John, Carquest in Nova Scotia carries Seafoam, pretty sure I saw it in a Carquest in I think NY or possibly Mass., so a local Carquest might carry it. Hope it cures your problem....have a great day....Greg

<><><><><><><><> <><><><><><><><> John, From your description it sounds more like electrical than fuel to me. But that's a wild guess from a long ways away. I don't think a couple of misfires from a fuel glitch would show on the tach. But an electrical issue could show right up. Maybe go over your wires and connections to make sure they are all clean and solid. I suppose a guy could spray the electrical stuff with WD-40 and wipe it down. If you got some salt deposits on something electrical I seem to recall the electrickery could find a new path under the certain conditions and cause misfires and no start or no run conditions. To me this sounds electrical, like a faulty connector or something that
wiggled off. The thinking is that if it were fuel you'd have more of an
issue than you seem to do. A sticky float, a lean-surge on the pilot
circuit, a clogged jet, a sinking float, a a vacuum leak etc etc. All these
would give you far more noticeable problems than a quick blip.

Sparkplug and plug wire, ignition coil, CDI, ignition switch, if your
clutch/kickstand switches are in working (or entirely removed) order. That
sort of stuff. Also connectors here and there that might need a bit of
 drying and greasing.

Sammy Hagar said it best. Now, where did I put that CD?
