The timing chain jumped on the crank end. The timing marks on the cams
themselves are still mated.
Ultimate cause looks, at this point, to be the doohickey spring. I
found a loop of a spring mashed p in the bottom of the stator cover,
along with a couple bits of material stuck to the magnets. The bike is
reloaded and headed down to a shop with a flywheel puller now.
Is there ANY chance the valves didn't get bent? At least the intakes
are striking the crown.
Thanks,
E

The piston looks very good. The gouges aren't really gouges, but just
deep enough to scrape the carbon and leave a shiny bit showing.
Carbon was a very thin film, less than a mm. Most of it wire brushed easily.

John, I had to go through the group. Comcast, along with a few other big
names, have branded my XR650R domain as a spammer.
Heh, I'll forward this to the owner of the bike. I'm just the tinkerer
doing the labor.
I did notice that the bike has a very thick sleeve with lots of room for
growth!
New (umm, over 7 years) call is actually KE1LB.

Yupper, the spring went where it shouldn't. [sarcasm on] It's all a myth, though. Over-tightening the adjustment bolt caused the spring to break. [sarcasm off] I've had great results with work from Schnitz Racing on the KLR heads. Lots of options. They also carry a forged piston 685 kit with much better rings, wrist pin, etc. I like them to also do the boring and honing. One stop, and it's always right. all the best, Mike> > The rest of the carnage............... > > http://autos.ph.groups.yahoo.com/group/DSN_KLR650/photos/browse/8898 > > E >

Religion is often directly proportional to the amount of grief your vehicle
is giving you. You start by invocing every deity you can think of to keep
her running so you make it home. Then when you don't, you call on every
mischievous devil you can think of to cure the machine for not making it
home. J

There used to be a local Harley group (Denton TX if I remember correctly)
that set up a non profit church org called RALPH. If you didn't do right by
others, treat you ole lady right, treat your dog right and treat your Harley
right, you could be riding down the road and suddenly your Harely would go
.......Raaalllllph! It would be kaput. I think they were a pretty pagan
bunch but most Harley orgs are.
