voltage regulator/fuses

Post by brian forrest » Wed Jul 02, 2008 8:47 am

Hello everyone - Sorry for the mass e-mail. I'm new to the group. I've read a little of the FAQ on this subject but want to ask a question. So, I have an 88 KLR 650. Got about 73k miles on it. Been running great forever, but the other day I had full power failure. Rode it to work, and when I came out I had nothing. I bump started it and got it home. Checked the two fuses under the seat. Both were blown. I replaced them both(20A ignition fuse, and 10A lights, etc fuse). Bike started right up, but none of the lights, blinkers, or tachometer worked. Looked like a small bit of white smoke came from the headlight when I started it up. Must have burned out the bulb. I put a voltage tester on the battery. It was reading about 18V at low rpm. My guess is that the voltage regulator/rectifier is toast. But, why would the lights still not work after replacing the fuse? Did the wires get toasted? Any advice you have would be most appreciated. I'm not super mechanically inclined, but can do my best to run some tests. thanks so much [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

voltage regulator/fuses

If the r/r is toast and puts out 18 volts to the system, you'll pop bulbs everywhere and pretty much instantly. Chances are that you just blew out the bulbs within a second of starting the bike. Be careful, it will cook your battery too and that might spill acid on your bike. No good. Replace the r/r stat. :) Reverend

voltage regulator/fuses

Before you fault the regulator/rectifier, keep in mind that if you lose the connection from the lighting system going to the regulator, it basically doesn't know that the voltage is going so high. As a result, it no longer regulates, and will just keep pumping voltage out to the battery the way you're seeing. You have to make sure the brown/white wire is getting 12V from the bike at the regulator. Since you say you don't have any lights, it's probably not seeing it. If you want to test this, you can just attach a small jumper wire between the white wire and brown/white wire terminals right at the regulator. My guess is that the voltage will come back in range if you do this. You have to find out where the open connection is for your lighting. The likeliest place really would be the fuse area, so even if the fuse looks okay, check it with a meter to make sure both ends of the fuse holder actually are connected together.

I 'm french, living near Paris. My first bike was a KLR 600 of 1984. I had always trail and I like doing off road: 600 KLR 1984 ---> 80 000km 600 TENRER 1989--> 70 000km 600 TRANSALP 1987---> 120 000km 600 TRANSALP 1999---> 116 000km 750 AFRICA TWIN 1991--> 125 000km 750 AFRICA TWIN 1992---> 100 000km (now) So the KLR was my first love, I have been to Marroco with it. In september, a nice guy will give (yes give!!) me a 600 KLR 1985(B) with only 14 000km. So I'm here to listen, and share knowledge. Thank you jpthebox [Non-text portions of this message have been removed] [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]
