I am almost ready to shed the stock tires from my 07 and was wondering if the MEFOs would be too aggressive a tire fore 80 / 20 Road ridding. I am most interested in a tire that will perform well on the road in all conditions (rain), and will give me fair tread wear.

As much as I love to join this foray with my own opinion the truth is that there is some good in all the dual sport tires. No clear "best" comes to the top and no true "worse". Here's a couple of comments that seem to prove out with time; Cheap tires don't last as long as expensive tires. Off road tires last less than road oriented. Road tires are bad in mud but good in wet. Most are OK in gravel and dirt. Expense does not directly relate to performance. A $150 tire, like a Michellin or Metzler is not 50% better than a $100 Pirelli. They are both very good brands and many riders love them all. Tires are just like oil, gas and heck, even motorcycles; there is no "best", and they all get the job done. PS-check out the KLR FAQ for a good section on tires. I'm not sure if anybody else mentioned them, but I am using the Maxxis 6006's on the front and back. They are aggressive enough tread to do some good off road riding, passable in mud, and good on the street. There is a slight bit of road howl, but nothing a good set of ear plugs can't cover. They are also about $115 a set delivered from most online dealers. I bought two sets of 4 dollar tire irons and put mine on myself with some WD40 and a friend. So far i've had the Avon Gripsters, trail wings, scorpions, Distanzas, MEFO's and Dunlop 606's and these are the best bang for buck tire so far. I am hoping to get about 3K or more from a rear, 6K from the front. Hope that helps. I'm on my second set of MEFOs and in my opinion they are more 50/50 tires. So, if you're more road oriented, I'd get something different. I have complete confidence in my MEFOs in the dirt, gravel, mud- puddles, and on the road (local and 1,000 mile tours rain or shine). I could have gone longer but 7K miles seemed long enough. I have been running the Mefo's front and rear for 3000 miles now and I love them. I'm doing about the same riding split as you and I think they are a huge improvement over the stock Dunlops. Ross Lindberg Fertile, MN

I don't know about that. I ran the original front tire for 7000 miles til the tread was down to about 1/8 inch, the Kenda 270 I replaced it with for 6000 miles and the tread was 0 on one side of the lugs, about 1/2 inch on the other, and now my Dunlop 607 has about 5000 miles and still damn near full tread depth. I ran a Kenda 761 rear(or was it the 671, I can never remember) for about 2000 miles and the center rib was gone. I'm now running a D607 on the rear that looks to deliver 7000 plus miles. I have nothing against Kenda. I probably whould have dumped the front 270 much earlier, or maybe turned it around to even it out. The rear I ran a long time with no center tread, which didni't help wet handling much. OVerall I like them quite a bit but my experience definitely was less miles on the cheaper Kendas. My riding was about 100% street so even the 270's don't make sense for me. I'm sure if I was riding gravel and rock my tire life would be less, but then, that's my story. In looking at costs the Kenda's cost me less than half the Dunlops and lasted much less. The dollar trade off is a "push". If you like changing tires its a good deal. You get a brand new tire twice as often.

Which tire will give me A) The best fuel economy. B) The best wear Due to the cost of changing tires (especially both at teh same time) I would prefer to put as much time between tire changes as possible. Metzler anything seems to be a hard and long wearing tire. Slow down saves the most gas and it doesn't cost you anything. Don R100, A6F
