I installed the Maier Universal Extreme handguards a couple of weeks ago for a dual sport ride and they also have a larger bend so the levers fit better. They are the molded plastic around the aluminum bar (just like the Acerbis Rally Pro's). I ended up putting them into use (3 times) and they worked BEAUTIFULLY! -cm

Greetings: I will soon be a KLR 650 owner (in about 48 hours!) The web and this list have been a tremendous help. Question: If I want handguards that will protect the brake/clutch levers if I lay the bike down, what brands work well? Some say the Maier Deluxe Woods aluminum handguards, and some go with the Ascerbis Rally Pro handguards. Also, I noticed on Dual-Star.com there is an Ascerbis Rally Dual-Sport handguard with an integrated turn signal. I m pretty new to biking, but I wonder if the turn signal in addition to the bike s stock signals would help make it real clear Hey, I m TURNING The only guess I have is Dual-Star appears to sell all quality stuff. Great one-stop shopping! Fear not, I plan on braided stainless steel brake lines front and rear, and progressive front fork springs and maybe a lowering link set very soon. I m 32 inseam and 5 10 so although I may be on the border for a KLR 650 I hear the lowering links actually help handling somewhat. No, these don't protect the controls very well. The rally-pros are great. So are Maier, Enduro Engineering (Mark is selling these at a good price right now), anything with solid mounts and a full-length metal bar. Devon

All, I've been shopping for some handguards to fit my stock bars. I've found the Acerbis guards on the Dual Star site, but it seems like someone mentioned another brand that they found superior. Maier? Can't remember the name. What are your preferences? Also, I would like to thank Mark St.Hilaire for his Doohickey, water pump, and valve adjustment write-ups. The Maier Woods Pro are nice aluminum guards as well as the Answer Bark Busters. You will have to by the hand protection separately. The Magnum hand guards will give you more hands protection than the Rally Pros. I think the Acerbis Rally Pros are nicer looking. Hi Steve, I have the Acerbis Rally guards with the built in turn signals (thought it couldn't hurt to have an extra set of flashers facing traffic!!) and the optional spoilers, and I love em! They provide good ventilation during the summer and are pretty good in the fall/winter seasons, too, with a good set of gloves. Haven't used the Maier before. Maier Deluxe Woods Pro. They are not as pretty as some of the others, but they are quite solid and the deflectors are BIG which I like for wind/rain protection during street riding. http://www.panix.com/~cesser/guards_comp/ has pics of the Maiers. Just beware the clearance of the brake lever, be sure the short end of the lever is clear of the aluminum bar of the guard or you won't get full lever travel... Don't ask.

From experience on my KDX and DRZ, while the Rally Pros do as good as job of protection as Woods Pro/Bark Busters, they do eventually break. For some reason its the clutch side that keeps breaking on me and I have a collection of three spare throttle sides. Outside of durability, the other advantage to the Woods Pro style is that you can pretty much use any scrap plastic to fashion brush guards. For either style hand guards the trick setup could be a set of ACN billet perches. The trick part is the brackets are machined with a big "U" shaped channel to provide a place for the cables and wires. You can check them out at http://www.acnmw.com - I know its somewhat out of line not being vendor friday, but this outfit is run by a couple of dead serious dual sport riders who are using their day job to pay for their weekend habit. I keep running into these guys at D36 Dual Sport rides where these guys have generously donated raffle prizes, I won my handguard mounts at the Reno Dust Devil's ride.
