border crossing

When crossing the border into Canada, what all is required? I am told that Canadian customs may require an insurance card showing coverage in Canada. I have a State Farm brochure showing my policy is valid in CA, and my regular card which makes no mention of Canadian coverage. Will that be enough? Thanks Joe

Your insurance agent should be able to get you a letter stating that you are covered in Canada. I had to go through the same kind of thing when I rented a car in Spain. Chances are that you won't need it, but it can't hurt to be prepared for it just in case. --Jonathan "smthng" Kalmes Springfield, VA 2005 Yamaha FJR1300ABS - "Blue Bayou" 2006 Jeep Unlimited Rubicon - "Teflon" 2008 Kawasaki KLR 650 - It's here, but it hasn't earned a name yet. ;) http://smthng.info "Look, the truth is, I've been trying to save the world, one person at a time, but, I'm meant for smthng bigger. Joe: I cross all the time - never been asked to provide proof of insc.! Check with your people re border documents - you could run into delays crossing back into the U.S. El Mur. Kamloops, B.C. [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

Call your agent and get a international proof of insurance. They have never given me any trouble and I can't remember even asking for it. The trouble is IF you need the insurance proof you have it. Don't worry about how fast you ride, the mounties are all on horses and you can out run them. Walt in Tampa, Fl [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

I've never had to show proof of insurance but you now need a passport to cross over to Canada or Mexico. I do know that you will need a valid passport. It sucks, but it's all part of our vaunted "Homeland Security" As far as insurance goes, I have been there several times in cars and big trucks and have never been asked about insurance. I'm pretty sure your regualr bike insurance would cover you, but it wouldn't hurt to gove your agent a call and make sure. Ross Lindberg Fertile, MN

That might be for air travel only. I routinely cross from Canada to US and back with birth certificate/photo id. (as recent as April) I think passport requirement for land travel starts in 2009.

As of Jan '08 you need a passport, but as long as you have your vehicle registration and "pink card" (proof of insurance) for IF you get pulled over by the Law, you should be OK. Oh yah - under NO CIRCUMSTANCES try to bring a firearm or Mace into Canada - they're both PROHIBITED. Ed-in-Canada-near-Calgary

Actually you don't need a passport yet if crossing by land. See http://www.cbp.gov/xp/cgov/travel/vacation/ready_set_go/ and click on land. Government photo id and birth certificate will do. ( I did this 2 weeks ago, the other way Can->US->Can) And there is a process for firearms (but not handguns) http://www.cfc-cafc.gc.ca/factsheets/visitin_e.asp [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]
