<><><><><><><><><> <><><><><><><><><> Chief, I haven't heard of many clutch cables breaking on the KLR. Usually folks replace them before they get to the breaking point. I bought the heavy duty one from Fred at www.arrowheadmotorsports.com two years ago before I departed on De Tour. Might want to wait on pulling the old one out until you can tape a new one to the end and pull it through. And it's pretty inconvenient when it does happen, especially in the middle of, oh, say, a 6-day ride (not speaking from experience or anything here). Because the cables aren't that expensive and are easy to carry during a trip, I bought a spare just for that reason. I leave it at the house when commuting (you know you can get it home without the cable) but always carry it on trips because that would really be a pain to have one break. Just my $.02. I found an interesting cable tip on another site - carry along a bicycle derailleur cable, which can easily be threaded through the exisitng sheath and is strong enough to get you to a shop or home. This guy bent the ends and used JB Weld to make the dealy-bobs that hook into the pivot and lever, but a small nut and bolt for each end might work as well. On my DR-Z I have a spare cable already running along side the old like I used to do when desert racing many mooons ago. On my KLR...well, I've been too lazy to do that. I'm sure it will bite me one of these days. __Arden

Howdy,My clutch cable snapped at the end of the season in the middle of the housing. I just snipped the housing several inches shorter than the break and tied the end to a stick. It weren't too pretty, but I could actuate the choke by hand to start it in the cold mornings. I replaced the cable/housing this spring with a new one.JimA5 Posted by: "Bill Watson" gcurve2000@... gcurve2000 Sat Apr 12, 2008 8:54 am (PDT) Jim wrote: ------------------- My clutch broke @ the lower end, where it comes out of the outer sheath. the bike is a 04 with 23,000 miles on it. Jim, Would you read your post again and tell us that you didn't mix up your apple and orange coloured clutchs and chokes? I just don't think a broken clutch cable affects the choking cabability- -but I could be wrong. shrug. revmaaatin.

clutch cable failed

Hey Jim, good to hear from ye. I am on my third clutch cable in four years. Kawa dealer here wanted something like 80 bucks for a new clutch cable. Then a friend said, why not buy a generic piece of cable, push it inside, and on the engine end, you screw on a wire stop little thing how do you call it. Every motorcycle shop of bycicle shop should have them. So now I just carry another length of cable with me, don t need to change the outer housing. When I came back from swimming by the little waterfall this morning, I realized going 65 miles an hour just made me feel comfy in a tanktop. I had been reading about a six gear, this morning while passing a few slow vehicles, I hit about 75 miles, and I found myself looking for the six, but I could not find it. Do you know what phantom means? Best, Jake from down under. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo! Arden, Andy, Q. Did you guys blob on some silicone to keep out water? Q. Are you doing anything for preserving the new cable? ie keeping the cable dry/rust free prior to 'need'? I have not pre-strung my spare cable--thought about it. Been in my 'spare' pile for nearly 4 years now...still there....waiting some 20,000 smiles later.

Rev, I zip-tied a small, heavy duty plastic bag over the upper end and put tape around the lower end where the cable leaves the sleeve. A blob of RTV on either is a good idea, though. I'm pretty sure my A11 has the original 11-year-old cable on it. I bought the bike in '98 and haven't changed it. __Arden
