(nklr) theft as a way of life

I am thinking of trimming a little off the front fender in hopes that it won't flop around so much at highway speeds. Anyone have any experience trying this?

Within the past year, I recall a lister mentioning they were going to try a KTM front fender on their KLR. They wanted something more aerodynamic and more rigid. Anyone know of this? At interstate speeds, 80mph+ here in AZ, the front fender on my KLR jumps around like crazy. It makes for a shakey scary ride. I would go to a lower fender but I have a Happy Trails fork brace (great piece) that complicates attaching one. I'm also considering trimming the stock fender.

That might have been me. I have an Acerbis Yamaha 2000 WRF fender mounted my KLR650X and I really like it. I had to drill mount holes and put two shims bettwen the rear most mounts and the triple for it to fit, but it works great. I think that it is a lot stiffer (the plastic is certainly thicker) and the deeply ribbed profile of the fender also helps to stiffen it. The curve of the fender is less than the stocker, so that the fender sticks out almost completely horizonal. I folded the fender in on itself several times off road and sprang back into shape without any deformation. I think it was $19-20 from Dennis Kirk. Bob Shaffer, a fellow KLR lister mounted a gray KTM fender to his A15. He indicated he had to slightly enlarge the mounting holes in the fender, but it bolted right up with no problems. It looks pretty trick. John --- jlabate@... wrote:

I'm new to this site because I just bought a used KLR650 (model year 200). I've never ridden off road (except when over-shooting a turn!), but log around 8,000 miles a year on various bikes. My current touring bike is a Kawasaki Voyager XII (2002) which I love. I bought the KLR partly for myself, but also for my two sons who are 20 and 23 years old and would like to start riding. I've always liked Kawasaki street bikes so the KLR seemed like a natural. Also, I have a summer home in the Adirondack Mountains of NY state and have often thought about running a bike in the woods. My questions concern the smaller, lower front fender. I've seen pictures of this fender. Where can I purchase this fender? How does it attach to the forks? What are the drawbacks of running this fender as opposed to the stock fender? Any information on this or anything else concerning the KLR would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Rick Rumsey

i love fred and all, but I have a hell of a time with his site. I was looking for one of those fenders as well (wondering if it would cut down some of that 'floating' feeling the front gets at speed) and finally found it. It's prolly just me being burnt out and a dummy, but...
