trials type tires on the klr
Just curious,I am looking for some cheap tires for an upcoming trip. I was looking through a Dennis Kirk book where they have Trials type tires that would fit the KLR. I have a vintage ('74) Suzuki TS 250. It still has the original trials type tires on them & honestly they are not THAT bad in the dirt.It got me wondering....How would they do on the big KLR???They are DOT approved ,they have an overall smooth, round profile (street) And a knobbie type tread (dirt). They also are ridiculously cheap.I wonder what they would be rated?Anybody running Trials type tires on your KLR???How do they work???

Terry, I just installed the IRC GP1 and really like them. Take a look at them. Nice tread $107.70 shipped from Chapparal

The tires we use in Vintage Trials (IRC and Michelin) probably wouldn't last
long on the street. We run them at 4-6psi. They're soft enough you can reach
down and twist a knob by hand.
But as far as good all-round tires, they're great. Just be sure you get
DOT-approved ones that are meant for street riding, too, and put the right
amount of air in.

Trials tyres are getting quite popular for the serious trail riders in Australia. One magazine actually compared bikes with trials tyres versus knobbies. Improved traction in many dirt applications from memory. Sloppy mud not as good but traction in rocky trails was too good for them. They didnt like trials tyres where power slides in and out of corners was your preferred riding style. It suited a corner style where straight tracking (ie : not sliding) was preferred. I think this means that they would be ideal for the KLR.

I also have the IRC GP1s, front and back, and like them a lot. My
maintenence log says my first GP1 on the rear made it 5,330 miles. It
could have gone another 1,000. The current rear tire has 3,437 and
will go as far as the first one. The front tire has 8,767 miles on it
and I'll probably change it within another thousand. I usually have
about 30 - 32 PSI in the rear and 28 - 30 in the front, which is
higher than KLR manual says, lower than limits on the tire. I rarely
spin them or lock them up, so I'm pretty easy on them.
They are quieter than the stock KLR tires and run pretty well on the
highway. I also take a lot of unpaved roads - some graded, some not -
and am happy with the tires. I'll get the same thing for my next set.

Now we've gone full circle - the orginal Yamaha Enduros from the late
60's came with Dunlop Trials Universals, about the only semi-knob you
could find back then. If it's a true trials tire you're thinking of
fitting, I'd check the speed and load rating before slipping a set
onto a KLR bound for a tour. From what I recall of riding my Yamaha
way back when, their square profile wasn't too good in the twisties.

I looked once also, there is a trails tire that somebody had mounted
on a MX bike and was really impressed with its grip and performance.
BUT
I could never find it in the correct size for the KLR and its not a
DOT approved tire (kinda doubt it would take the heat and weight of a
KLR on pavement)
I think its model was X-11 or X11 forgot brand..
K270 is tried and true, as is the D-606

trials type tires on the klr
There have been at least a couple of articles published in the last couple of years about
using trials tires on dirt bikes. Real Michelin trials tires, run at pressures of 3-8 psi. These
are a far cry from the old Dunlop trials Universals we used to see on "street scramblers".
They are said to give excellent traction without tearing up the trail as much as knobbies.
Obviously, they would be totally unsuited to street use at those pressures, and even if
aired up, would not last long on pavement.

trials type tires on the klr
I may interject here. My KLR has Mitas a E07 tyre on the rear. Hard as nails and wears very good. But when loaded up (105 kg plus gear) and given a very hot day, I can see visible tyre wear after say 500klm. I suspect that the trials tyres on a hot day on the pavement would self destruct. Therefore if your riding is predominantly on the dirt (road or trail), trials tyres would be a fair decision. Long distance slabbing would be best suited to the current crop of dual sport tyres. Thats my 2 cents worth. Ciao
