what size socket do i need?
What size socket do I need to remove the big nut that you remove to get off
the rear wheel? I have used a large adjustable wrench, but I want to just
carry a socket with me on the road. I'm guessing it's a 21mm, but I'm not
sure. Thanks!

What size are the axle nuts? Front: Nut, 22 mm; axle head, 17 mm. Rear: Nut, 24 mm; axle head, 19 mm. Your official, super-dooper KLR tool kit should have a wrench that
fits the rear axle nut...but it doesn't have one that fits the front.
You have to buy an '08 to get that.

Thanks guys. I have an '08. I didn't think I had a wrench that fit it, but I
could have been mistaken. I will buy the 24mm socket anyway. Much preferred.

Great idea Jud! I wasn't familiar with the product, but after using The
Google, I found them. However, at this
linkhttp://frpoffroad.com/catalog/details.aspx?ProdID=4>to their
products, I couldn't find their 22/24 combo. I also couldn't find
it herehttp://www.motorcycle-superstore.com/4/22/278/4720/ITEM/Moose-Racing-Riders-Wrench-By-Fredette.aspx>.
Do you know of any place that would sell them? If they don't make the
22/24mm combo, which would be a better combo: the 17/24 or the 19/24?

Hello? Have you checked out the Arrowhead Superstore?
I have lots of different axle wrenches for both early and late model KLRs.

Why bother with a limited-use box-end wrench? The best combo would be the 7" or 10" Knipex Cobra pliers: http://www.kk.org/cooltools/archives/000655.php> Strong lightweight German quality. They don't slip, and they're so strong you can stand on them to remove a fastener. I carry the 7" set in my bike's toolkit, and I use the similar 10" Knipex Alligator pliers in the garage. The Cobra plier is the better of the two.
