rear suspension

Hi, I have just got a used KLR and thought I would take the rear suspension linkages apart and grease all the bearings and shafts. Is there an FAQ on the subject or a document in the archives that would give me some hints? I tried removing the main bolt that holds the foot rests on and goes through the shock linkage and couldn't get it to move even with a breaker bar , likewise I couldn't knock the shafts that hold the tie rods onto the linkage body through, do I need to use a bigger hammer or heat? Thanks in advance Terry.

I don't know if there is a FAQ. The removal and instalation is pretty straight forward. (if your mechanically inclined). I did thins on my bike and it helped. The suspension is smoother and goes throught all of it's travel easily.

I had the same problem. Use heat on the nuts. Propane worked well. The big time consumer is getting the subframe off. You need to remove the gas tank. The rest is pretty simple.. Good luck.. If you have any questions ask me. Raz A8: cccp7@...

After a weekend ride trying to keep up with XR's, DRZ's, WR's etc. etc. and having ridden one of the new XR650's, I would like to do something with my rear suspension. (Did an admirable job of keeping up...if I do say so myself, but was a tough on the old body!) Are there any good aftermarket set ups for the KLR650? I don't mind if it were to even increase ground clearance, as I am 6'6" and have no problem with the height. I have the progressive front springs and belray oil. Canuk on a KLR

The L.R. Progressive rear spring mounted on the stock shock has made a difference for big guys + at least one small guy, me. Bogdan

We've got a '84 KLR 600 and it's time to fix the rear suspension. The bike is standing pretty high but as soon as you go and sit on it feels as if it sags all the way to the ground. Is there a way of stiffening the rear suspension or do I need to lift the bike? Dynamite Dant

You could replace the whole shock with something better, KLR shocks are not top shelf to begin with. You could have the shock serviced, just an oil change and regas could be good enough for you, else the shock may need shaft and seal work which would not be cheap. Somebody may make stiffer springs to fit the stock shock but the damping is probably gone anyway. Mister_T Melbourne Australia

I have a problem with rear clearance. I do not ride in the dirt at all but do some riding in mountain areas. My first problem was before I received my license plate the rear tire would touch the inner fender on hard braking. Now I have the plate I relocated it higher towards the plate light. Did not work. I ground down part of my plate and the aluminum backing that I made plus part of the rear fender. Since then I have relocated the plate to the outer fender and in the process of making a mount for the plate light. I weigh about 230 with gear may be 240. I have the shock setting maxed out. I know that I need a new shock but cannot afford one now. My bike is a 2002 KLR650 I have 3000 miles since April 10. Is there another solution besides new spring or shock? Thanks for any help. TC How tight is your chain? I sat on the bike as far back on the seat that I might ever ride and had someone else check the chain. What I thought had been plenty loose was too tight. Now, with it on the centerstand I can push it up and touch the swingarm. Currently, I am running a 15 tooth front sprocket, and a 42 on the back with an oversize tire. It doesn't hit very often. I weigh about 270, and when we went to Alaska, I must have been carrying 40lb more. Standard rear sprocket is a 43 tooth. You could try using a 44. You probably would not notice the difference, and it would bring the tire forward a little. If you really need a new shock, your Cow dealer should replace it at no cost. Strange to me that a shock would fail on such a new bike. My A14 has 46,000 miles on it and I think the shock is just fine. Good luck. Allan

A new Progressive spring for the stock shock costs about $90. Harvey
