Hey Steve, no flames here brother, but I have an eMap and I love it so far. It is too new to me for me to pass judgment on it for the KORG, but I would like to ask if anyone has had an eMap fail on them? After hearing the stories of destruction of the lll's... Also, what other firmware is missing from the eMap that is useful on a bike? I agree the non-backlighted buttons are a PITA at night at first, but I have only put about 500 miles on mine and I have them memorized already... When are the new Legends and Vistas hitting the market? Price? Thanks CA Stu <-- blames Gino for any listers' stress. Ever.

I own and use the original eTrex on my KLR with a R.A.M. mount. I personally think the eTrex is awesome, but I am a bit of a simple kind of person. If these new units are built anything like the orignial, the users will be impressed with their ruggedness. My eTrex has gone swimming, dropped, sat in the bright sun for hours and vibrated for hours on the KLR. NEVER has it failed me. My 2 cents... == Rev. bike? Here's a couple of "missing" features I find useful to bikes: No HSI (compass) page (I miss this a LOT) No highway page (more useful to other activities) No pan and goto "MAP" waypoint (I miss this a lot too) No way to display voltage Can't display altitude, time to next, ETA at destination, or time of day while navigating on "main" page No variable display backlight brightness No way to display LARGE character readouts like the III+/12Map "compass" page Much less flexibility in setting map display settings in general These are all small features, but I miss them anyway. If you have never had them, you won't miss them? A couple of features that I miss in other activities (not mc) No way to display: Vmg (velocity made good) turn deviation accurate track angle If I sit and think about it, I can probably come up with more...

I have them memorized too, but I really don't like anything that adds to the distraction level these units already provide while riding. Having the lit buttons is a BIG plus on the bike.

I understand that they are going to be offered next month. I don't recall the prices I saw, but they looked competitive to the units they are offering now. I will probably end up with a Vista one way or the other. Just what I need, another GPS (lol).

If you have never had them, you won't miss them? -snip- Steve, what version of the firmware does your eMap have? My eMap seems to have a lot of the things you mention: I am very green in the world of GPS, but my eMap does display a compass, highways, goes to waypoints, does display altitude , time to next waypoint, and time of day. The backlight display is adjustable, but it works by adjusting the contrast of the screen, not the brightness of the light itself... All in all I am impressed with it, and I think it has a bigger screen and more memory capacity than the lll+..? I reckon it's kind of a trade off there. Different models for different people. I personally don't see the reason for an altimeter on a motorcycle, even though my GPS has one. Tom at Cycoactive told me "all your friends will laugh at you until they ride off the edge of their map and you can keep going..." CA Stu

Brad I'm no GPS expert, but if you intend to go off road and enjoy adventure touring a GPS is fine tool to help you navigate some of the less travelled trails and roads. I use one (Magellan300) and have found it extremly useful at times. the Garmin III Plus is a better GPS than my Magellan, it gives better detail. There are many many feature to a GPS, far more than I could mention or do justice to, so i won't try, but if you have a G I Joes near you, pop in there and take a lot at what there is on the market, also check out the internet. Will say this though, don't be fooled into buying a cheaper model, because 2 months down the road, you'll wish you had spent that bit more to get a unit that has all the bells and whistles. Here are a few of the feature's I like about my GPS Back tracking, compass, elevation, speed, mileage, heading, 12 or 24 hour clock, best fishing & hunting times, bearing, waypoints, alarms, back light, maps, phone book, route planning, and so on and so on. Hey Ya'll I was by WalMart this morning and they had a clearance sale - a GPS III Plus regular $347 for $150. I don't know if this really is a good price or not. Mainly, I don't know how useful these things are. Feedback appreciated. Ride safe Jim

Amazon.com had them for $250 at one time, but $150 is a steal. Even at that price though, make sure its got all the features you need. I've heard that particular model is short on memory, which may or may not be a drawback for what you are gonna use it for.

Jim, immediately to back to that Wal-Mart and buy all they have. Keep one for yourself, and sell the rest for $200, with my name at the top of your list. Really. I've seen no price even approaching that one for the 3Plus, and I'd love to have one! Mark Wise men still seek Him... Mark St.Hilaire, Sr A15 My Adelphia Email can be "iffy."
