Movie about Glen who was captured by Colombian rebels is on making the rounds on TV this week. He rode a KLR from California to Terra Del Fuego and back. Up here in the Seattle area its on Comcast channel 673NGCHD (National Geographic Channel HD) 7:00 pm tonight Friday 25th. I talked with Glen a while back and he got really fed up with his KLR in the end, he said it basically disintegrated and has since switched to BMW. He had one bike stolen by the rebels while captive, but his friends put together an identical one and shipped it out so he could continue his journey. Great story, well worth getting the book. The "BMW vs KLR" comes up a lot in Glen's talks (he says that's one of the most common questions). I saw Glen's presentation at Bob's BMW in Maryland last year. If you're within 100 miles of Glen, you MUST go to his presentation. You won't be disappointed. Look for him at http://www.strikingviking.net/ Glen rode the KLR very hard, including jumping it while fully loaded. I can see how it wouldn't take that kind of riding, but the BMW apparently does. IIRC, Glen also had doohickey problems and charging system problems with the KLR. He also said that Kawasaki had no interest in sponsoring him after he circled South America after he was released from captivity. However, several BMW dealers got together and got him a BMW. And he's been happily riding BMW ever since. best, Chris -----Original Message----- From: DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com [mailto:DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com] On Behalf Of macvalk Sent: Friday, January 25, 2008 12:54 PM To: DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com Subject: [DSN_KLR650] Glen Heggstad-"Locked Up Abroad" Movie about Glen who was captured by Colombian rebels is on making the rounds on TV this week. Probably broke the KLR subframe. No surprise there. If he's riding a GS, I believe the subframe is welded to the frame, hence it should be far, far stronger. Either of the other problems (I can't remember, but I think he was running an Electrex?) are well known, and he should have fixed them before leaving.

That's no surprise either. BMW has worldwide support, K does not. Kawasaki is heavy machinery company at heart. BMW is exclusively a vehicle company. If I didn't think a BMW was going to strand me in the middle of nowhere, I'd own one too, but I know my KLR like the back of my hand, and short of needing parts I could probably fix it anywhere in the world. To each his own. Glen is tough mofo for sure. Z

The ham radio is probably UHF walkie-talkie (hand-held) that "pings" off of repeater stations (not that big). I'd side with others on the "Zen of Motorcycle Riding". I'm not an ace-level rider so I have to focus my milli-seconds of reaction time on the task at hand so as to derive the greatest pleasure. Seriously. I wish I could count how many times someone had popped up here and announced that he was about to leave on an N,000 mile trip but all would be great electrically because he'd just installed one of those fantastic Electrex upgrades. With that company's reliability record, it's hard to say much but "Oops"... The funny thing is, we seem to have a distinct lack of trouble reports linked to _failure_ to shell out for the stator upgrade...
