Listers,
I will be in AZ again in October and am planning to see some country in
Southern Cal or Nevada. I was thinking Death Valley, Mono Lake, Yosemite,
Kings Canyon and Sequoia. What kind of temperatures should I expect this
time of year? Will these places still be over populated? Any special
sights I should see?
I saw a blurb on the news recently about the Snake Canyon area of NE Nevada.
Looks like pretty country and maybe more suited to my open-country attitude.
Anybody traveled that area?

You should be fine in October, and the foliage along US395 should be
pretty nice, too. Your only potential problem would be if there is
some snow in the high country which might close the Tioga Pass (Rt.
120 through Yosemite). Generally, though, Oct is well before winter
closure. If you want to add Kings Canyon/Sequoia to the itinerary you
will probably cross the Sierra through Yosemite, then turn south to
Sequoia. At that point -- assuming you will be heading home -- you
will be faced with the unpleasant prospect of continuing south on CA
99 to (ugh!) Bakersfield and then east to the Mojave again. For me,
anyway, a preferred itinerary would be to travel north from Death
Valley on US395, see Mono Lake, and then cross over the Sierra through
Yosemite on 120. At this point I would skip Sequoia (it's nice but
nothing to compare with Yosemite) and head north to Sonora to cross
back over the Sierra on the Sonora Pass road (CA 108), then south
again on 395. For some change of scenery on the return cut off of 395
at Big Pine on to CA 168 toward NV. Be sure to take the spur road up
to the top of the Bristlecone Pine Monument -- the greatest
motorcycling road you will ever see. At the junction of NV266 and US95
there is a great photo opportunity at the whore house there.
