rear sprocket play???

Post by Beef » Wed Sep 26, 2007 6:39 am

Should the rear sprocket have any side to side motion?? I know its a dumb question but mine does. What will cause this and can I take it off and tighten something? Thanks..Scotty D

<><><><><><><> <><><><><><><> Scotty D, I just took a look and feel of the sprocket on my KLR to make sure I'm giving decent information. I serviced it last week when I installed a new rear tire. My rear sprocket is tight and I can wiggle it side to side if I apply a lot of force. It maybe moves 1/64" when grasped at the rear (3 o'clock position) and wiggled. It is tight the entire time. No clunking or easy movement. I'd call it tight. I suppose the axle could be loose as a starting point since the axle will "pull" the swingarm tight against the wheel and sprocket when tightened. There is a bearing in the sprocket carrier that I suppose could be worn allowing the sprocket and carrier to move. If you were missing the spacer between the sprocket carrier and the wheel hub I think that might allow the sprocket to move but I'm thinking you'd notice that pretty easily. The sprocket could be loose on the sprocket carrier but again I'd guess you'd notice that. The sprocket is held to the carrier by about 6 studs and nuts. I did have two cracked studs on my sprocket carrier the second time I changed rear sprockets. And those are fasteners I use a torque wrench on for even and correct tightening action. I just made new studs and haven't had a problem since. Now if the looseness you are asking about is rotational... There are some rubber blocks placed in the side of the wheel hub that act as cushions between the sprocket carrier and wheel hub. They absorb some shock when torque is applied in either direction. If the rubbers are worn the sprocket carrier would have some rotational slop. When I was a poverty rider in high school in the '70s I used to fill the space between the worn rubber blocks on my Suzuki TS-185 with bath tub caulk. I'd assemble the sprocket carrier and let it sit for about 24 hours. Then I was good to go for another 2,000 smiles or so. I haven't heard of anyone wearing out the rubber blocks on a KLR. I suppose a severely misaligned rear wheel, sprocket, chain could cause premature failure of the bearing in the sprocket carrier. I think the chain would try to apply force to the side of the sprocket which would be tough on the bearing in the sprocket carrier. Hope this is helpful. rear sprocket play???

Subject: Re: [DSN_KLR650] Rear sprocket play??? Hey Scotty, I wondered when this one would come up. I first noticed the same thing on my first KLR, a new 2002 A16, while I was riding up Gohler Wash in Death valley in the middle of no where. At the time it caused me great concern, halving at least an 1/8" or even a little more of side to side motion like you are experiencing. I thought the sprocket carrier bearing had gone bad and I babied the bike around for the rest of the 450 mile trip expecting the bearing to completely fail at anytime. No fun. Made it home it home and pressed in a new bearing, no change. At that point I figured the rubber bumpers were shot, ordered that part from Kawi and put it in. Once again, no change. Went to my dealer and checked a new bike on the floor and, although not as bad as mine, it too had some side to side play that most likely would be the just as bad as mine in a few thousand miles. Something of a design flaw I think as I'd never seen this before on any other bike. 4 years later I bought a used 2004 A18 with 2500 miles on it and it did the same thing. IMO the sprocket carrier should be a double row bearing to eliminate this. What I ended up doing, and it worked great on both the A16 and the A18, was cutting 6 shims the same shape as the paddles on the sprocket carrier that slide into the rubber bumpers out of some poly plastic stock, set one in each hole in the bumper held in place with a dab of grease. Slid the sprocket carrier in place and it fit in VERY snug, a nice tight fit. That was the end of side to side movement in both cases and my A18 now has gone over 14000 miles with this set up and still has no side to side movement. The bumpers don't seem to wear at all as far as I can tell. The plastic I used was exactly .050" of an inch thick and actually was what dealers put in the license plate frames with the dealers name on it when you buy a new car or bike. Tough stuff. An unexpected side benefit was that the shifting felt much smoother and the whole drivetrain seemed smoother to me. Has to make life easier on that sprocket carrier bearing and the chain also. Try it, it's cheap, it works and provides instant gratification. Oh, and if you do it put all of the shims on the same side of each hole in the bumper. You'll like it. Why no NKLR in the subject line? I don't want to read this drivel. KLR riders are a diverse group and don't form an echo chamber for any one political or religious view. Follow the rules please. Here they are (online here http://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/DSN_KLR650/> ): Please adhere to the three following guidelines for the list: 1. NO personal attacks. Keep "opinions" as objective discussions. 2. Please use "NKLR" in the subject line for any off topic discussions so people may filter their email if so desired. 3. Please use "Vendor" in the subject line for any Vendor posts on Fridays so people may filter their email if so desired. _____ From: DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com [mailto:DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com] On Behalf Of Hedrek Sent: Wednesday, September 26, 2007 10:30 PM To: Michael; DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com Subject: Re: [DSN_KLR650] Siky pantyhose and Hurt feelings - My president is a cheerleader!?!?! 1.
