John, I've been searching through the messages using every relevant keyword or phrase that I can think of, and have been unable to turn up the message I was looking for. Someone recently posted about this; I'm pretty sure it involved taking apart the ignition lock and looking on the body of it for either a key code, or code for the lock that would give you the info to make the key. That's certainly not much help, I know. The info is there, I knew I should have flagged that message, or printed it out, better yet... Good luck, Mark Wise men still seek Him... John- You should be able to remove the ignition cylinder from the bike and locate the keycode on it so your dealer can get you a key. The cylinder is bolted to the upper triple clamp by two 10mm bolts from the bottom... I can't remember if you'll need to pull the instrument cluster off first, but I would recommend it anyhow as there isn't too much room to work with in there. If that doesn't work I have a matching gas cap and ignition cynlinder set. Z DC

The key code is on the ingnition key base (six digit alphanuemeric if I remember correctly), held on from underneath by the two 10mm bolts. I was able to access the bolts by removing the cowling. Didn't have to touch the instrument cluster otherwise. The key code will allow you to have a key made. Matching the helmet lock will not work in the ignition as the helmet lock uses only four of the five tumblers. Todd A9 A3

I had a great time at Lake Powell 2 days ago. I took a great swim. I lost all my keys and I don't even drink. I had backups for my other bike and car but none for my 03 KLR. Whats the best way to get going with out a key for a KLR? Should I take the ignition out? How do I do that? Is there a way to order a key with the VIN? My local Honda shop suggested I take out the ignition and take that to a key smith and that he would look the number up on the ignition and make a key from that. Any suggestions would be highly appreciated and will add to your karmic well being I'm sure. Thanks JOhn Black

No way a group hug with you sweaty dusty tough guys, even if it is only macho posturing. Too many John Wayne movies, and Johnny Cash records, stuff for kids. One of the toughest men on record said that the only way to overcome evil is with good, and I think he was tougher that all of us together. After reading with some interest the long articles about OIL, here is how I pick my oil. The nearest convenient gas station is Shell, so I buy their oil, Shell Helix super 20-50, and I didn t consult a NASA scientist to see if that s ok. Before I have used Castrol GTX, also a good oil. I think the frequency of the oil changes, the riding temps, how you use the clutch, could be very important also. I read that Honda has new models that keep the oils separate, crankcase and cylinder, and that makes sense too. So compassion is not a sign of weakness, but of strength, to me it seems that the whole world is nuts anyhow, but I still have to deal with it. And that s how, even if my temper flares, and I can teach you a few curses in different langauges. Often as I ride my KLR, I find myself singing, and if I don t know the words, (I don t) I ll make em up.
