helmets?
Hi there, All -
Well, I've added a Corbin Dual Platform Seat, Gel Grips, Engine
Guard/Highway Pegs and Rear Bag and Saddle Bags to my '07 KLR.
One other question that I have, (and I know that Helmets are a very
personal item), is in regards to Helmets...I currently wear a Full Face
Helmet. However, during the summer on the Highway, it gets VERY hot.
I've considered going with a Flip Up or even a Motorcross style helmet
for a little bit more comfort.
What about helmet noise and buffetting, etc??? Has anyone found one
style of helmet to be "better" than another?
Thanks,
Clyde

I like my Arai XD. It's noisier than a normal full face, but there's
more airflow and it's comfortable on the highway up to 75 or 80mph or
so. I recently did a ride with temps into the low 100's (a dry heat,
not a Tennessee heat) and was comfortable. Flip face helmets are also
generally louder and the ones I've worn flow more air than a standard
full-face, but a lot of that depends on which helmets you're
comparing and how they fit.
In the end, the best helmet is the one that fits you the best, has
the features you want, and handles the airflow of your bike the best.
No helmet is perfectly quiet inside, so I wear earplugs in whatever
helmet I have on.

I really like my Arai XD. It flows a lot of air, has a visor and a shield.
Some have reported noise as an issue with it. I don't have an issue with that
at all but some are more sensitive. Not cheap but by far my favorite helmet.
I also have a flip up/modular helmet for cooler weather. I've used several
brands and the Nolan is a good one.

Helmets are like motor oil, too many opinions.
I have a shoei flip up, coziest helmet ever, but wind noise is a bit too much.
My old hjc 11 was whisper quiet, great breath sheild, but no flip up.
Buy a white helmet only, it will be cooler in the helmet than outside when temps are really high.

Motocross helmets generally are cooler, at the expense of much more helmet noise and buffeting at highway speeds. But I have a full-face Arai helmet (it's the only one that correctly fits my head) and manage to do okay in hot weather through the simple expedient of a) cracking the helmet visor into its "city" setting, and b) dumping water into the helmet from time to time to soak the helmet liner with water when the temperature gets above 95F outside. Air flow going through the helmet liner (very well designed Arai setup) then cools down my head considerably via evaporation. As for buffeting, my Arai does not buffet. It is properly aerodynamically designed so that even with the stock windshield on a pre-'08 KLR my head is not yanked around by turbulence, and I can turn my head and look over my shoulder without feeling like my head is about to be yanked off. It is, however, somewhat boomy -- air flowing under it makes a "boom boom boom boom" noise that will damage your hearing if you do not wear earplugs. -E> One other question that I have, (and I know that Helmets are a very > personal item), is in regards to Helmets...I currently wear a Full Face > Helmet. I wear a HJC CL-SP and it's okay up to around 85F. However, the current
temperature here is 102F with 85% humidity. Let's see... carry the two,
multiply the coefficient and... the heat index is "unbearable". From
what I've seen this week, all the bike shops are now selling "beanies"
exclusively as that's the only type of helmet I've seen anybody in
Atlanta wear in over a week.
Don't see how most flip-up helmets would be an improvement as you're
supposed to ride with the face down. A motocross helmet is an
intriguing idea.

I just bought a KLR and my first purchase was a helmet. I researched DOT
and Snell standards and decided that Snell (i.e. expensive helmet) wasn't
important to me. I go t a Z1R motocross helmet on ebay for $40+ shipping.
Goggles (Spy) were $35. I don't like the visor. It really catches the
wind. But, airflow is nice (esp on 100 degree days!). I'm going to get a
Shark closeout (full-face) for winter riding with my next paycheck.

Not sure I see the logic, there. A helmet with expanded stryrofoam
liner is essentially a Coleman cooler that prevents heat from going
either way. Since your head temp runs at around 98.6F it's probably
better to keep that temp inside rather than admit 100F+ temps from
outside. With 85% humidity you aren't going to get a lot of
evaporative cooling anyway.
One huge advantage we have here in CA is the dry heat. The sun is a
killer, but if you wear an evaporative vest under a mesh jacket as I
do on very hot days the effect is just like air conditioning. I've
actually been uncomfortably cool on a 100F day. My torso, anyway.
Butt was still roasting.

Well here's another opinion to think about.
I won't buy a cheapy helmet, but I won't buy a top o the line Arie (sp?) I go with composite
helmets (carbon fiber and kevlar) and Buy name brand stuff no knock offs.
This is the one piece of equipment you should not skimp on.
My helmet is a Thor Force carbon fiber kevlar mix It's MX helmet and around $250.
But what price would you put on your head?
Boot, shoes, pant, jacket. sure skimp on that stuff but not the helmet.
