Just wondering if anyone out there had some good luck with buying helmets online. Any good websites that can be recommended (good prices)? Also, anyone use the Shoei RJ-Air2? I kinda like the open face because of the unrestricted view, but am wondering about having some spills in the dirt and rocks. Do open face helmets offer the same degree of protection? Also, I wonder what the wind noise is going to be like at highway speeds with an open face helmet... Any comments are appreciated! Tom. I don't like the flip style helmet, but is there any other type of helmet that has a good compromise between open faced/full face helmets?

You might try ebay, some vendors have a slew of sizes and colors. I bought a nice HJC LT12 there. Nice road helmet. I also have an HJC CL3 for dirt. If you're going to be in the dirt much I'd recommend 2 helmets, a dirt and street. Dirts are lighter, have a nice visor, better ventilation,and you wear goggles with them which is a lot nicer in dust/mud, etc. Much cheaper to replace goggle lenses than faceshields. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Tom: I had a very good purchasing experience with The Helmet Shop located in Daytona, FL. They had the lowest prices on Arai helmets at the time I was shopping for one. The staff was knowledgeable and the product was delivered when they said it would be. http://www.volusiaonline.com/helmet I would not recommend purchasing a helmet without first trying it on. Fitment is critical for safety and comfort. Open vs. full face helmets: I have seen several road helmets after low speed accidents with significant portions of the chin guard ground away from friction to make me a full face helmet believer. A 50 mph get off in a tobacco field, 20 years ago, also made me a believer in full face coverage in off road settings. Tom...Try www.helmetshop.com good prices and $8 shipping. I would highly recommend a full coverage helmet off road as well as on road. Doing a face plant on dirt, rocks or pavement without full coverage is not recommended. Full coverage off road helmets are comfortable, lite weight, many have removable/washable liners and flow lot's of air to keep you cool. Wear goggles and ear plugs and you should be good to go. I hate to ask all these newbie questions, I have a question about recomendations about helmets. I am doing my own research and finding out about things on my own but need to confirm with you guys, cause the salesman in the dealers they are the biggest lie after some one created religon. Yesterday they didnt even tell me how much gas I have in the new KLR and I ran out of gas on the highway but somehow when I switched the fuel to reserve, I was able to fill up in 2 minutes later on the service road. I did buy a BS helmet for about 77 bucks in a hurry and now need a serious one. Any suggestions.

Really depends on the kind of riding you do, but my recommendation is either Nolan or HJC helmets. They are good quality and value and have a wide range of styles that would suit any riding style you have. Naturally a full face helmet will provide maximun protection. Many choices, and all depends on you. Do you like: open-face, dirt oriented, street biased, chin-bar raiseable? Of course the big question: How much are you willing to spend? I wear top-line helmets as I find them more comfortable to wear longer, quieter, and they just fit better... You will need to try on a bunch of helmets in your price range to see what works. I wear Shoei mostly, as they fit my head. Arai doesn't, but they make great helmets..... One of my mantras: "If you have a $50 head, where a $50 helmet.." I think you'll find that you "get what you pay for", for the most part. I know this doesn't help, but you need to answer a couple of the questions before we can help, at least that's IMHO.. Interesting you say this at the end; I am looking to buy an HJC Symax as it is the only fullface of it's kind that fits me. (The chinbar raises making it feel like an open-face helmet, for those not familiar) I do agree that these two lines have vastly improved over the years to where they are top-quality. However, I have never been able to wear a Nolan, they just do NOT fit my head... Shoei's do.. All comes down to what feels good on your head, so you'll wear it.. Nothing worse (well, not by much anyway) than a helmet that feels like you want to throw it away after about an hour on your head. Of course, this is all just IMHO, of course. Anything you buy in the States has to be DOT approved, so you don't have to consider questions of which is the safest. That leaves you to consider which style you want, what features you want, and what your budget will buy you. But the most important things to consider are fit and comfort. A helmet has to fit well to protect you properly, and many dealers aren't pros at helmet fit. Bell has a good helmet fit tutorial on their web site, www.bellhelmets.com. Arai is so adamant about fit that they are removing their helmets from mail and internet catalogs. Generally, the more you pay, the more comfort you can expect. I agree with Gino that HJC and Nolan both give good value. There's a brand called Arrow (www.giali.com) that makes a nice flip-face helmet that converts to an open face, and many others out there at all price points. Shoei's are great if you have a Shoei-shaped head. I don't, so I usually wear an Arai. Try on several brands to get an idea of how differently they can fit and what's really comfortable for you. On-road or off? Fit is the most important aspect. A $120 helmet that fits well is better than a $400 Arai that doesn't. One mfr's size "M" might be perfect while another's "M" won't even go on. Fit also changes within the same mfr's product lineup. An HJC CL-12 XXXL fits me quite well. An HLC LT-20 in XXXL won't even go on my head.
