Sounds like somebody needs to turn off the shift lock and read the faq: "Shift lever breakage Many riders have seen the stock shift lever break at the base weld. This doesn't always happen, but you should at least remove your stock unit and inspect the quality of the weld. If the weld looks complete and full, you will probably be OK. If not, you can either have the weld redone, or better yet, replace the shifter with a Moose or IMS unit. These units, though, can show wear in the splines. Examine the shifter for play occasionally, and tighten the clamp bolt as needed. Note that the IMS unit is about 3/4" longer than the stock unit (I think the Moose is about the same as stock). The extra length can be handy for fitting MX boots under the tip." Not trying to be a jerk, just a reminder to new readers. It is worth the time to read the FAQ: http://www.bigcee.com/klr650faq.html -- Doug Herr doug@... A16 in Oakland, California

That's a very common failure, and the reason for the popular aftermarket ones. Michael -- "Do you think that when they asked George Washington for ID he just whipped out a quarter?" --Steven Wright San Francisco, CA

Just broke ? No spongy feeling first ? Would say heavy foot shifting. Now take it off, weld it up, "Paint it black" (love that song) If inclined add a washer to the back side of the tip (case protection) grind to fit, "Paint that black" also, put it on and go riding. Ta da... much much rather have that soft stock shifter fold/bend/break that have some big ole beefy lever take out the shaft it resides on. My $.02 Dooden A15 Green Ape Oh ya... touch your caps lock key so the light on the keyboard goes off. ;-) --- In DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com, "norespect1964ii" wrote:

...and further to what Dooden said: I added a piece of wire thru the tip of the shifter and attached it to my skidplate so that IF/WHEN my shifter breaks it'll STILL be where I can finf it so I can weld it! :>) Ed

I keep a spare in my trunk. The IMS Shifter is more HD, but any shifter can be torn off, keep a spare and a set of vice grips Sean Brown Looking for the perfect gift for the wife/Mom/or "the person who has everything?" www.brownsbirdestates.com To: DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com Sent: Sunday, August 12, 2007 9:05:00 AM Subject: [DSN_KLR650] SHIFTER BROKE MY SHIFTER CRACKED @ 19,000 MI ON A 2005 FOR NO APPARENT REASON NEAR THE WELD AT THE SHAFT....
