taller windshield???

Post by tennessee_klr_rider » Wed Aug 08, 2007 5:17 pm

Hi there, All - I've just recently added Gel Grips, Engine Guard/Highway Pegs and a GPS to my KLR. I'm considering going ahead and replacing the windshield and the seat. Are the taller windshields that much better? I get some helmet buffering when I ride, but I don't know if 4" is enough to cut that down, (or out), or not. Also, I'm torn between the Russell Day Long and the Corbin seats...any opinions, thoughts, etc? Thanks, Clyde tennessee_klr_rider 2007 KLR650 (Red) Jacksboro, TN

Hi Clyde! I actually went the other way recently: I removed the windscreen entirely. I was doing a long stretch on a 70 MPH highway in hot, gusty winds and was getting a fair amount of helmet buffeting. Others on the list have reported that the airflow is much smoother with the windscreen removed, so I decided to give it a try. Turns out they were right. There's definitely more wind hitting my upper body, so I tend to sit a little further back on the seat so that the forward lean of my torso will balance the higher amount of wind hitting it. But, that wind is smooth and welcome on a hot day. No more helmet buffeting. Give it a try, as it's free. If you still don't like it, then you can feel free to spend some money on a different windscreen. -- Blake Sobiloff http://www.sobiloff.com/> San Jose, CA (USA)

I have to agree with Blake here. I didn't take mine off since I have a Duchin Dash and wanted the windshield to help rain and bugs over the dash. My helmet would ring like a church bell at my favorite cruising speed (an indicated 70 mph). I took a 4 inch grinder with a cut-off wheel and chopped off the little lip on the windshield. The ringing and buffeting is gone, and it was cheap and easy. Ross Lindberg Fertile, MN

I have a handlebar attached type windshield that works fine. Take it off if you are riding rough stuff or you will knock your teeth out if riding with an open face or flip up visor helmet. Criswell

Last Saturday I went on a 450 mile group ride (SF down to Fergusson Nacimiento Road and out to Hiway 1 below Big Sur and back to SF). Because my ass got so sore, I did a lot of standing, and I noticed that as I stood up the buffetting stopped, my head was in clean airflow, quiet and smooth. I'd sit down and the buffetting would start right up again. I may try the "no screen" thing too. -- "Do you think that when they asked George Washington for ID he just whipped out a quarter?" --Steven Wright San Francisco, CA

Clyde, I bought a windscreen from a 750 BMW fairing at a swap meet and mounted it onto my handlebars. It REALLY works well at keeping you in calm air, ESPECIALLY in rain. Ed

taller windshield???

I bought a lowered dished seat from KLR650.com and a 4" taller than stock wind shield. The stock setup was directing the wind blast into my face creating an unacceptable amount of wind noise. With this new setup the wind now starts hitting the top of my helmet just above my eyes. I have much less wind noise now and am satisfied with the setup. I'm 5' 9". Thanks for all of the helpful advise, everyone. I may try cutting the lip off of the stock windshield before I buy the taller one. However, I hear a multitude of different stories when it comes to seats. I've heard go Corbin, but avoid the dished seat; go Corbin, but only get the dished seat; avoid Corbin and go with Russell Day-Long; and finally, don't buy any of the big names, get the seat kit from Saddlemen...
