Hi, what are the top five causes of/for brake downs of KLR's? OK, flats, running out of gas, and leaving the key in the "P" position don't count. That said, what do you all see as the top five reasons for a KLR breakdown. Eddie (03' KLR "la poderosa")

Duh, lack of maintenance. My klr and my wife's klr have been to Canada, Alaska, Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras and Belize, all in the last year. I did lots of preventative maintenance before we left on both trips and had no break down issues at all.

44k miles. not one stumble, much less a breakdown. Larry

Clutch and kickstand interlocks come to mind. I've had a broken clutch cable, but that's a slow-down, not a break-down. Had a rectifier burn out on my first KLR. That was a stinky mess. Can't think of anything else that's stopped me cold. __Arden --- In DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com, "eddiebmauri" wrote:

<><><><><><><><> <><><><><><><><> Eddie, I've been off list for the last week while traveling and the first message I got was Arden's reply to you. My first thought was poor preparation of the machine for the intended job. Most of the guys I've taken trips with don't do shoddy maintenance so we don't have many issues to contend with. Non have stopped us. Some stuff that we've fixed on the trail/road include: - flat tires - battery dead or low on fluid (replaced battery or added distilled water, jumped bike with jumper cables) - countershaft sprocket nut fell off and countershaft threads broken (replaced nut and JB Kwik'd the nut to the sprocket to acts as a locking device) - missing chain master link clips (replaced with spare clip, this is on after market chains as stock chains don't use a master link) - broken wire under seat (small white one from battery to fuses) - headlight bulb broken (replaced) - loose steering head bearings on a new bike (less than 2,000 smiles fixed by the owner in a parking lot) - bike totaled when a pick up crossed the line and ran over the bike (rider ok, bike rebuilt in less than 2 months) - bent axle from high side on asphalt (replaced with axle from totaled bike) - dirty air filter from riding in dirt for days on end (cleaned using No Toil filter maintenance products) OK, most of that stuff isn't breakdowns. But it's stuff we've had to deal with while traveling. how about O.M.F. Operator malfunction Or Old MF'er ether way it's your choice. Not enough time on the bike for a break down yet Got little over 6K miles on and it's only seven months old. Change the oil every 2K, blue lock tight on all fasteners once every month or so. Normal PM's and no problems yet. I have to agree with Jeff if the is properly PMed it will last a long time but it will wear out eventually

7 years with 3 KLR's and only once let down. One- the '99 rubbed the wire harness through just under that bridge where the tank bolts down. This of course let ALL the smoke out of several wires and shut down the headlight. I rode it back to the shop, soldered the shorts and shrink tubed them all. A split piece of heater hose now protects that spot of all three bikes. Other than that, flats, a broken chain locking the rear wheel, A near "Out of gas experience"- had to lay her down on the road side to get that bit on the right side. I really wish I could say the same for my '95 BMW R1100RS. Now THAT'S a pile with issues!!!!! My Ducati 900 Monster NEVER goes more than 5 miles away from the shop. Never. My MotoGuzzi- around the world if you please. The KLR's, my first choice when I need to get there- even if there is across the u.s. I have taken many trips across the u.s. on the KLR while the BMW heapster lays in the garage- where it belongs. I really like looking at it is the ONLY reason it's not laying in someone else's garage. Shane

Awesome call! I had forgotten about those pesky saftey interlocks, because they are the first thing I modify when I get a KLR. Regards,Gary--- In DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com, "Arden Kysely" wrote:
