speedo error

Post by rsanders30117 » Mon Nov 22, 2004 7:42 am

This error is typical for the KLR650. I've mounted a bicycle computer on my A14 & have calibrated it. My speedometer has an approximate +8% error @ 55 65 m/h. From what I've read, most motorcycles with mechanical speedometers have similar errors, I guess to discourage speeding. Interestingly my odometer is just about correct. --- In DSN_klr650@yahoogroups.com, "Joseph Jones" wrote:

I was getting the same error with the stock front tire until I replaced it with a 3.25 (100/90) Metzeler knobby I had laying around, and now it matches my GPS speed. It looks like I'll have to go back to a 90/90 when I replace the Metzeler with a Dunlop 606, since I don't see a 100/90 listed. Clif http://stripe.colorado.edu/~lines/clif.html

speedo error

A serious speedo error would be anyone weighing over 135 pounds wearing one... But seriously, folks, my speedomeer has a consistent error of over 8%. An indicated 44mph is 40 mph measured by GPS. --- In DSN_klr650@yahoogroups.com, Bill Watson wrote:

so I grab the GPS and spend a few minutes really trying to be accurate. After a few minutes of testing, I run the numbers at the various test speeds and find that the speedo reads a whopping average 7.5% too fast. Helloooo, quality!

pretty excessive, and based on the KLR FAQ's and sites, this is a pretty common error. When my cars do this, I simply buy another $6 plastic tranny gear with a different tooth count to get the ratio right. But here, I assume I'm stuck, and that's just the way it is, right? I wasn't sure if anyone ever tackled recalibrating the speedo spring (because the odo, surprisingly, is almost dead on as- is)... or if everyone simply blows it off.

Is there a fix to correct the inaccurate speedometer on my A16, or on any of the KLRs? Thanks, Jim
