Yes, they can be welded, but you have to cut them off in order to remove the engine covers for any reason. Like I did to change the clutch. The best simple solution is to Helicoil the holes, the best heavy duty solution may be to fabricate a threaded metal insert, which will require cutting off the bottom of the box, chiseling out the remnants of the stripped captive nuts, fabricating an insert, welding it in place, and then welding the bottom of the box back on. I wonder if the 2008 model has a different / better footpeg mount? At 250 pounds of man, I have stripped the footpeg bolts out more than once. Twice, in the worst possible situations. Once, on the first day of a 7 day camping trip to Colorado, and once, three years later, at the top of Hancock Pass, in Colorado. Evidently Colorado makes footpegs strip out in my KLRs. Actually, it was on two different bikes, too. Thansk CA Stu

I was able to pull the engine with the right peg welded on, don't know about the left. Paul Streeter

You've already received all the good answers (buy a Clymers service manual, order a replacement owner's manual from a dealer), but I'll just note that the right side of the engine case is embossed with "2.5 l" next to the oil sight glass, indicating that you'll need about 2.5 liters of oil on hand to fill the bike after you drain the oil and change the filter. There's some debate about how to properly measure the oil level. One notable personality believes that there's a mild problem with Kawasaki's recommendation; read www.multisurfacemotorcycling.com/klrpage/oilchange.htm> and make up your own mind. I'll simply note that if you dump 2.5 liters of oil in the bike the oil level is well above the top line on the sight glass. Also, Jeff Saline has confirmed with Kawasaki that the oil change interval recommended in the Owner's Manual is incorrect. The recommendation should be 3,000 miles, not 6,000 miles as printed. Additionally, used oil analysis by Jeff, myself, Rev. Martin, and others indicates that the KLR is very hard on the oil's viscosity and that even shorter oil change intervals could be recommended, depending on the severity of use. One (other) piece of unsolicited advice: Change *all* the fluids and check the valves yourself. When buying a used bike I typically don't trust that the previous owner has actually been as thorough as he claims, and it's especially easy to fudge about the valves. Exactly what stripped? I ask because I weight more than 250 lb. and like to ride standing up. I've replaced the stock footpeg bolts with Grade 10.9 (? -- metric equivalant of GR 8) and locktighted them in place. thanks, Chris ---------- Original Message ---------------------------------- From: "Stuart Mumford" ...
