tires for my klr

I have this posted on another site...some of you probably have seen it there...I am a large man..280..and a bit older than some..54..I want a bike that will carry me for a 4 hr. trip to se my daughter about 4 times a year..rest of the time will be local roads..fire service roads ..and tractor roads and trails to some of the fishing spots ..fishing is my passion and there are places where my truck cannot get to..would like this forums opinion on weather a klr is the bike for me..respect all of your opinions /suggestions...thanks to all...Rob

hello there. a 4 hour trip 4 times a year.. how far is 4 hours? any hoo im a 36 yo 280 lbs man, i ride my klr 12000 km's (7500 miles)a year most trips are about 200 to 300 km's a day (about 120 - 180 miles) and im doing pretty good. the factory seat is not the best but i lived with it for 4 years before getting a corbin. the klr should get to 90% of the fishing spots you want, but it is damn heavy to pic k up,if you lay it down. i cant think of a enduro other than the klr that i would ride for 4 hours on the highway. but this is just my opinion. klr6502k

Hiya Rob. I'm 6'1", 285 and 48 y.o. and I ride a 05 KLR about 15,000 miles a year. If you don't mind a rest stop or two, a KLR will do you just fine for a four hour trip. The only thing I added to mine for comfort is a Saddleman gel seat kit from Dualstar. http://www.dual-star.com/index2/Brand/Kawasaki/klr%20650%20gel%20seat.htm. This a inexpensive upgrade that is easy to install that even I made look professionally installed. It may not be Lazy boy comfy but I'd buy one again. Howdy Rob, It will certainly do all that you require and it is a good bike for larger people. I think leg length is an important consideration for many riders who are concerned with the KLR being right for them. It's a tall 400+ pounds. Take the two extremes of your intended use, trails to the fishing hole and occasional long trips. The KLR may be one of the very few best bikes to span those two extremes. A more dirt oriented dual sport, like a Suzuki DRZ400 will handle tougher trails, but isn't going to be as comfortable on long trips, in my opinion, while a Suzuki baby Strom (DL650) will be better for long trips but not (nearly) as capable on trails, again in my opinion. There are a couple of other bikes that fit in approximately teh KLR niche or span of capabilities. The Suzuki DR650SE and the BMW 650 dual sport come to mind. The first has a more limited aftermarket, which may or may not matter, while the second is significantly more money. I think they are both very nice bike, though, and both have some pluses versus the KLR, especially for those of us who are inseam challenged.

Oh no, the dreaded tire thread! Oh well; my 2 cents. I too amd a street only rider. I love to drag the pegs. I have a Kenda 761 rear and will not be replacing it. The center groove wore out in about 2000 miles. There is a ton of rubber left but the damn tred is gone, like a slick. Also the 761 squirms on tight corners. This has been reported by others and I will affirm. I'm running a Dunlop 607 (or is it 706?) on the front and will be replacing the rear with the same. THis tire grips great and is very quiet. So far I"ve got just a couple of thousand miles on it but there is absolutely no wear showing. Its a bit more expensive but I gave up buying tires based on price. Now if you really want to go SM, try a Pirelli Diablo on the rear. I think they come in a size that will fit. This is a real moto tire.
