That's a pretty ringing endorsement, Luke. Gee, people really go that fast on gravel? ;-^ Doug Analog Aardvark wrote:

I had a roughly 35 mph get-off on the freeway a couple months ago on a nerf'd KLR. Gouges in the bars and a good sized dent in the skid plate, but no radiator, shroud, or engine damage. (and just this morning I FINALLY got word from my insurance company about a check and got to tell the shop to go ahead. Can't wait to get back on) erik

The good news? They decided the bike it worth $4100, and I got them to not total the bike based on a $2300 estimate. The original estimate was around $3500, but included a lot of things that either weren't related to the accident (hello? the side cover that's epoxied together and still holding the oil in? not from the accident!), or were things I just didn't care about. It's a KLR, I don't need it restored to factory fresh, I just want all the neccessary parts functioning! But I guess most people on most bikes do care about scratched bits, so I had to go be very specific about what I wanted fixed and what I didn't. Still waiting for a check, but at least I could tell the shop to go ahead. erik

When you get a check (which presumably includes the shop labor cost and the shops inflated parts prices) are you obliged to actually have the shop do the work. Agreed, it could be considered cheezy to have them do all the work for the insurance eval and then not get paid. I've just had too many !$%%-ups with dealer mechanics, plus I'd imagine you could save a bundle buying the parts mail-order from Ron Ayers. Of course, it would be nice to ride the bike sometime within the next 9 months :) Maybe the rules vary state to state? Tony

I don't think I am. And generally I'd want to do it all myself - this is the first time my bike's seen a shop. But for a couple of reasons I want to just let them do it. The first is that none of the work is really mechanical - I basically just need a bunch of stuff taken off and replacements put back on. And honestly, replacing the fairing and handlebars doesn't sound like like much fun to me. And neither does removing the bolt that sheared off on the footpeg mount. The other reason is that the bike has been sitting there for a looong time now, and I suspect they'll want to charge me some sort of daily fee for storage if I take it back without then doing any work. Also, I need to buy some other replacement gear, and I know their accessories people. I think I can get a better deal out of them if I don't try to screw the service dept ;) erik

How to drill out seized/broken bolts is a good skill to learn if you have a KLR :-) Plus gives you a chance to go buy some cool screw/bolt extractors.

Yeah. I was just curious how the process worked. I've never (touch wood) got into an accident or crashed badly in 14 years of riding. By law you are allowed to do your own work and still maintain your warranty (assuming it's still in effect), of course there is no law saying the shop has to prepare an insurance estimate for you. If you were upfront about wanting to take the bike back as soon as they had completed the insurance estimate, I wonder if they would do it for a fee. Probably the the fee would be about what you'd save in labor/cheaper parts :-) Tony

Doug, I have lots of first hand experience with them. They will definitely protect what you want protected including your fuel tank and side plastics. I have learned they are easier to put on if you take the fuel tank off. They ain't cheap, but they look pretty useful on the web site, and installation looks simple. Primary use will be on-road/dirt roads (not much real off-road). My concern is to protect the radiator stuff, of course. I'm one of those people who can fall off a bike at a gas station. (d@mn3d leg splint...) Does anyone know if the Happy Trails (or others if any) Paris Dakar nerf bars will fit a KLR that has an IMS 6.6 gal military type black tank (the one with the molded-in air vents)? Also, I assume the front engine guard seen in the picture sits above the normal aluminum skid plate everyone uses? (I have a Dual Star skid plate). Thank You, Jeff A20 [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

Many thanks for all the useful feedback. I liked the look of these things right off the bat, but you have convinced me to give them a try. Also, great thanks to the several folks who suggested desmoparts for the screw kits. Think I'm gonna get the kits, some blue goo and have at it over the rest of the winter, a little at a time. As someone said: great way to get to know the bike better. I sure do feel a lot less intimidated by the KLR mechanicals than I did with the V4 Hondas! Hope I don't get too cocky and "screw" anything major up. Doug
