My local dealer advised me that a bad pick up coil was the reason my
KLR stopped running. I'm thinking no problem, just replace the coil.
However, they told me that I need to replace the stator and coil to
the tune of almost $400 in parts. Now they aren't so sure and are
checking with the factory to see. My problem is we're heading to Nova
Scotia in less than 2 weeks and the clock is ticking. I have several
motorcycles but I want to ride the KLR on this one. I thought someone
out there might know the answer.

stator replacement required for bad pick up coil???

The stator has absolutely nothing to do with the ignition. The ignition 'pulsing coil' as I think Kawasaki calls it is entirely separate from the stator and its generating coils. I'm afraid you are giving bad info here. The pick up coil you mention is not part of the stator but the ignition exciter coil is and if it is not good there wll be no ignition. It is easily checked. There are 5 wires coming off the stator, three are yellow and they are from the generator coils. Then there are a red wire and a white wire that come from the ignition excitor coil that, again, is part of the stator. An ohm meter across these two wires should read 100 to 200 ohms according to my shop manual. The measurement for the pickup coil is 100 to 150 ohms. This is a case where the parts diagrams are not helpful but a wiring diagram and shop manual are. Kurt> parts diagram section.

Kurt, You are absolutely right -- I just figured that since the part that was supposed to be bad was the pick-up coil, which is separate from the stator, then there was no reason to replace the stator. As you properly point out, run the tests and replace the part that's broke. Surprised the dealership needed to call the factory rep on this one. . .> pickup coil is 100 to 150 ohms. Keep your tires pumped up to near the max psi printed on the sidewall
unless you're poking down a trail and need the extra traction of a low
pressure tire.
