I'm averaging 180 miles before having to switch to reserve! Bike has 4000 miles on it. Some soot evident on rear fender. Stock pipe etc. Any suggestions or like experiences please respond. I've been hoping this would improve via an act of God but it's not working out that way. Thanks

Has it ever achieved better mileage, or is that about how far you've always been able to go on a tank of gas? What kind of riding do you do, and at what speeds, with what loads? How's your maintenance been-- when was the last time you adjusted the valves and cleaned the air filter? Sorry for the 20 questions in response to your question, but we'll need more details before we can do anything other than guess. In addition the questions that Blake noted, what is the actual MPG? Reserve varies on these beasts, and it varies as to how much we put in when filling up. So, clearly you need to record your odometer reading at each fill-up and even try to verify that the odometer is reading mostly correctly. Changes in front tire will effect the odometer reading. I've been planning on checking out my petcock as it's an old bike and I thought maybe it was clogged. I'm not sure about your 2006. I have over 20k miles. I watch my milage pretty good and I get about the same MPG. Believe it or not my worst tank only got me 138 miles down the road my best was 195. What I have found over the years of owning vehicles is the harder you push them the less MPG you will have. I ride at 6000 RPM almost all the time and this is the cause of the crappy gas mileage if I rode at 4500 rpm I would get the 55+ MPG I just can't ride that slow on the highway. My worse case gas milage is still three times better then my trucks average so I ain't complaining I'm just glad I have a 5 gallon tank and not the 3.5 gallon tank on most other dual sports or the feeble 2.8 gallon on the honda stopping every 100 miles for gas would really suck Kerry

Sounds about right to me. I've owned three KLR's and have rarely got better mileage than you mentioned. 180 miles = 289.67kms. If I got 300 kms out of a tank before reserve I was real happy. There have been occasions while riding on gravel ( with a heavy hand !) where I hit reseve at less than 260 kms! Some of the mileage claims for this bike are extravagant to the point of unbelieveability. Cheers, Steve

How many miles you go before hitting reserve not nearly as accurate as how many gallons you've used. The fuel tap pickup tubes are not the same from bike to bike. Both my KLRs (one 49 state / one CA emissions) consistently get at least 50-55 mpg, usually closer to 60. That's with all 170 pounds of me and maybe 10 pounds of stuff on the rear rack. I am usually in the 4-6k RPM range while riding. I check the mileage at almost every fill up, and have never been under 50 mpg. The trip odometer also makes a handy "fuel gauge". 225 miles and it's time to look for a gas station, but reserve does not hit till somewhere around 250-275 miles, and even then there is plenty of fuel left. Try these; from easy to hardest: Check your air filter, it may be plugged up of dirty. Check you choke cable, it may not be turning all the way off. Maybe check the choke itself too. Clean out the carb. Check your valve clearance. They might be too tight. I rag my bike out the the freeway at 80+ (speedo, not actual) and consistently get around 55 MPG. Your going to have to do a mileage check vs fuel put in the bike to get an accurate fuel mileage figure. Both of my KLR's did in the 50's. The old '92 would get about 250 till reserve and my '00 gets to around 230 before asking for reserve. Depends on how far the main fuel tube is sticking up. Andy in Louisiana

Hello, I am getting about 200-210 before I have to switch to reserve, but I am also about 290-300 pounds. I am taking it in for my first tune up so I hope that the mileage will get a little better, but it may not with my weight that I carry on the bike. Chris 07 KLR-650
