oil site glass install and c model fork volume

Post by phibene » Fri May 18, 2007 7:50 am

Guys and gals, thought I'd get back to the board on my experience with the two subjects above: Oil site glass was cracked, actually punctured by and off road journey. found the part number on the board here and ordered from my local dealer. While waiting for the part I put silicon over the hole and was still able to run the bike. Might not have been the best idea, but I haven't seen any ill effects. As suggested I inserted a small flat head screw driver between the glass and the frame of the site glass. This basically broke the glass the rest of the way and I pried the old one out very easily. the new one pressed in with the help of a socket and mallet. No worries. The C model forks obviously hold considerably more oil than the A model. When I added the 355ml specified in the book the oil was nowhere near the 190mm from the top of the fork tube with the lower compressed all the way. So I continued to add more and more until I had approx 500ml in the tube and I used the suggestion of some grand board member of a trigger squirt bottle top with the tube cut to 190mm. I squirted oil until none came out and the level was adjusted on both sides. Wish I had gone with 15 wt oil or ATF, but I'm selling the bike and can't be bothered changing it again. Lastly I pulled off the front headlight fairing and adjusted my headlight so that it pointed more in front of me rather than mostly down like it was. A very easy fix for what I thought was a weak headlight. Hope my experiences help someone else out. Regards, Phillip
