Hi Folks,
My buddy Mark and I finished the valves today, along with new swing arm and pivot bearings, new pivot bolt and bushing, cleaned dirty rad, straightend fins, new brake lines front and rear, installed a MSM upgraded shock and installed a heat troller for my heated jacket liner.
Fired 'er up and fuel began peeing out a drain in the carb, lots of black smoke. Mark figured it was a stuck float so we started it up again and Mark tapped on the carb and it ran much better. The valve job made it start much easier but as it warms the idle gets a bit lumpy. We're thinking there may be some dirt stuck in the jet or float valve and it may require a carb job.
I may try running some carb cleaner through it before I rip it aprt but I'm guessing I'll need to overhaul it at some point. It's rideable but not running as well as it could.
Any thoughts from the list on my carb issue?
By the way I really recommend a look see at the swing arm and pivot bearings by all. My pivot bolt was bathed in rusty water and very pitted. (Drain hole eh? Yeah right, plugged solid). We had a bear of a time getting it out. All better now with clean fresh grease.
Regards,
Garrett

It's rideable but not running as well as it could. I've had really good luck with SeaFoam. I usually pour in maybe 1/4 - 1/3 of a can to 1/4 - 1/2 tank (this makes it a bit concentrated) and then run the bike for a bit to let it get into the carb. Then park it and let it sit overnight. Next day I run it a bit and then top off the tank to dilute the cleaner. I haven't had any issues with my KLR but this 'treatment' fixed two issues when I had my Concours - I really didn't want to take the carbs out on that thingWorth a shot - and if it doesn't fix the issue - it's easy enough to pull the carb on the KLR.
