I don't think that is exactly correct. There are two methods of calculating octane- research (R) & motor (M). In the US, most stations rate the octane as the average of the two (R+M/2). At sea level, you need more octane for the same performance (so Regular is typically 87) and at higher altitudes (Colorado) Regular is 85. I believe that 87 minimum is recommended using the R+M/2 method. Mine runs much better with premium (93) (less knocking- I live at sea level) and since I am buying so little at a time, price difference is not significant. John A-18

Thanks for that description of octane requirements. I had forgotten that, and was curious why when I went to Colorado last month, the standard grade gas was 85 octane. In Los Angeles (500 above sea level) standard grade is 87. I guess the difference is at sea level, more air is getting in the engine, hence higher compression pressure, hence more power, hence more prone to detonation, hence higher octane requirement. I should have figured that out before. And yes, the Kawi owners' manual says 87 octane, but I think it also says watch for knocking. If it does, use higher octane, or stop lugging the motor! When i bought my V65 Sabre the manual listed 86 octane minimum by the R+M/2. I was surprised on a 10:1 compression engine. I filled that beast up with 87 octane gas. It sounded like someone was dropping ball bearings on a metal plate. Drained and filled with premium. I tried running 89.5 octane in my KLR. Once warmed up, it would ping terrible on acceleration or load. With 93 octane, it only pings lightly during hard, low rpm acceleration, and only if temp guage is past the 1/2 way mark. With these two experiences, I have to assume that the higher number in those charts is the one to go by. Best regards Rick A17 John wrote: --- In DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com, Rick McCauley wrote:

A motorcycle wrench I knew many years ago once made a comment that he could always tell which owners used high octane because whenever he did carb work, their carbs and practically the bowls were always pristine with no varnish. May not be enough to warrant the extra cost of high grade but I think about this every now and then. DougW

The only difference in the different grades of fuel is the octane rating not the additive package. sd_ware wrote:A motorcycle wrench I knew many years ago once made a comment that he could always tell which owners used high octane because whenever he did carb work, their carbs and practically the bowls were always pristine with no varnish. I hate to use the other K word but Shane is right. You could take parts from other bikes and piece on together but in the long run it would be cheaper to buy a different bike. At least not until an aftermarket company developes one. Because it's not realy the throttle body that the problem it the electronics and sensors involved that make it complex. Kerry
